Windows 10: Use bootable USB to upgrade to 1511

Okay so I couldn't get Windows Update to install the November update, so I downloaded the .ISO file and created a bootable USB drive.

My question is can use the setup .exe in the thumb drive to do the upgrade? Or will this want to do a clean install?

I just want the upgrade to keep my stuff intact

Thanks AV, will try usb next time and report back. Not really sure why using bootable dvd should fail, since I have used this method before on 3 successful Win 10 clean installs (on 1511 and 2 earlier previews). I was also able to successfully upgrade
from 1511 to 1607 using iso to bootable dvd last August. Anyway, my next attempt will be using bootable usb, but not likely til next month, household needs time to de-stress.

If you want to Upgrade or Install Windows 10 version 1511 immediately on your computer, then you can use Media
Creation Tool. Once you download the tool, run it and select
Upgrade this PC now. You can also able create a bootable USB or DVD through Media Creation Tool. Try to upgrade your PC to windows 10
version 1511 using that either to 32 or 64 bit, as you require.

 

First, before doing anything else, please do a backup/image of your present installation just in case you need it.

I believe after you've downloaded the iso you would mount it, double click setup.exe and you will be given choices, one of those will be upgrade/install. I don't remember the exact steps, or screens that come up but that was the only way I was able to install the 10586 1511 Nov. update.

Windows update wouldn't work for some reason, tried many things but still wouldn't work, ended up doing the same thing you're doing. All came out fine, only problem was W10 updated a video driver which caused the display to go back to 800x600 with no option the change it. Once I realized that and rolled back the video driver all was ok.

Yeah, I do all my imaging on Sunday and it is almost completed for my main system (the only one of 4 that didn't get the upgrade)

I was wondering if I could just mount the ISO as well. Couldn't find any good info on it though. In my head I was thinking if it was mounted and had to restart, would it be able to finish. That's why I did the bootable USB.

I have already downloaded the driver for my graphics card as well. Can't go without my Skyrim lol

I was looking for the topic and found it after I posted, look at post #2 by davidhk, 1511 10586 update he has helped me to do just what you're trying to do.

These are the steps you need to do, d/l to a USB wasn't necessary to perform the upgrade, but it's good to have a W10 iso on USB if you ever need to perform a repair windows operation.

Well now I am getting mad! Went through the steps, looked like all was well. It does the first restart and goes straight to the desktop with an "installation failed" message.

This is ridiculous! I have a feeling that a clean install is my only option.

Any other ideas?

 

Just to be clear, did you use the USB to install from? I d/l the iso to my SSD (made a folder for it in my documents) then followed davidhk's instructions. Download the iso > right click the iso > click mount > click setup.exe

You might need to download the iso again just to make sure it's not corrupt, PAI if you've got a slower connection, but maybe doing that and d/l it straight to your OS drive on your computer will make a difference.

That's pretty much all I've got as far as downloading the iso and using it to upgrade from, IMO upgrade is much better since you keep all your files.

P.S. Just thought of this, I've also seen on the forum where sometimes an anti virus, or something extra of that nature can stop an upgrade. Might try disabling protection while you're running the upgrade. Disconnecting from the internet until you're done upgrading.

I right clicked the ISO, ran as administrator, clicked setup, and it went through the motions. After it got to 100% and said it was restarting. Then straight to desktop with the error.

I will turn off Defender, that's the only AV I have and unplug it from the net and remove all USB devices and try again.

Before you do the Clean Install, would you mind spend a few hours and use the method listed below ?

Use this Tech Bench link and download the Windows 10 iso file:

Please make sure you do follow the steps to the letter................
scroll down to Select Edition > click the pointer at the right and select Windows 10 > click Confirm.
click the pointer and select Language > make sure you pick the same language the computer is now running > click Confirm
select the bit version, 32 or 64-bit. Make sure you select the same bit version as the computer is now running.
at the bottom, click the pointer next to Save > click Save As > navigate to a folder of your choice > click the chosen folder > click Save
The iso will start downloading to your chosen folder.
When it is done, go to that folder > open the folder > right click at the iso file > click Mount > click Setup.exe
Installation will begin.
It will allow you to keep you files, settings and apps.
No product key is required.
Activation will be automatic.

 

Thanks davidhk, I will try it again. I downloaded the ISO from there last night. Maybe, as suggested the ISO is bad...

Those are the steps I took to try to install as well.

I live in the sticks and have satellite interwebs, so it'll take me awhile. I'll let it go overnight

Remember. The method I posted to you do not require you to burn the iso to a DVD or USB.
The iso will remain in your chosen folder. You can burn it after you have successfully installed Windows 10.

 

Took my PC (it's an all in one) to a buddies house in town and used his T1 connection. It is now on checking for updates.





I will post back with results.
