User account is not being displayed on login screen in Windows 10

    Hello All,

I opened up and powered up my HP laptop yesterday 8/31/20 and it immediately started doing a BIOS update and Firmware updates. I had been meaning to perform these updates, but I don't use this laptop that often. After it appeared to finish updating, it went to the all black HP bootup screen. This is the screen it goes to right before getting to the Windows login screen. It hung there for about 10 mins until I manually rebooted my laptop. I didnt want to reboot because it had just finished updating, but I wasnt really watching when the updates finished so I wasnt sure if a manual reboot was safe in this scenario.

So when the computer booted up after my manual reboot, it only popped up with my admin account and not my regular user account. I didnt notice at the time that the toggle in the bottom left corner that allows you to toggle back n forth from your different user accounts was there either at the time. So I log into the admin account and verify my regular user is still listed in list of user accounts within Computer Management > Users as well as the account is still there with its data within Windows Explorer.

So this is what I have tried/verified:

-Verified that my regular user account is not disabled

-Went to Local Group Policy Edit/Local Security Policy's Security Options and navigated to the Interactive Logon: Don't display last signed in. It was originally set to "Not Defined" when I first navigated to it. I tried changing it to Enabled and Disabled. Disabling does not do anything, but Enabling allows me to select Switch User at the Windows log in screen. When I select Switch User, it just allows me to type in the username and password of either of my accounts regular user or admin. It doesnt give me the option to select a particular account and type in the password, PIN, etc.

-Re-enabled ALL user accounts. All accounts had been disabled EXCEPT my regular user account and my admin account originally so I tried having all accounts enabled and rebooting and that didnt work either.

-Attempted to perform a System Restore to a particular time where this issue was not occurring. When I tried to do that, it listed only my admin account as the account that I choose from. Then I selected the option that said "I forgot my password or dont see my account". The next screen said "Only admin accounts that have logged into this computer will be shown here. If you know your password but dont see the account listed, restart your computer and verify the account is enabled" or something like that.

-I went into my Windows Updates to see what updates had transpired and also just to see if there was anything left, and to my surprise, there was more updates left to download

One thing I did not try yet was logging into Safe Mode. Ive seen a few post in here with the same issue or similar and I remember seeing someone suggest logging into Safe Mode, but I cant remember what was said to be done.

I just want log in screen back to normal and want to be able to toggle. Any help would be glad appreciated.

    Thanks

    :)

    Windows users at login

I cannot see all of my user accounts on the login screen on a new Windows 10 laptop. I have an account for my son and it does not appear as a user on the login screen. It is listed if I display the users with the CMD prompt. The only account I see is my
account which is an admin. His account is a user. All the suggestions I've seen are not available on home edition.

  3. How to make Windows 10 login Screen display users that are signed in

    1. Press the Windows logo key + R simultaneously to open the Run box. Type cmd and press Enter.
    2. When the Command Prompt window opens, type query user and press Enter. It will list all users that are currently logged on your computer.

goto CONTROL PANEL/ USER ACCOUNTS then you have to remove all the other accounts except for the one you logon with....then restart...it should bypass the login tho it will still show the screen for it...it will continue to load windows...good luck*Rockout :rockout:

edit:: it asks for a login when there are more then one accounts..or if you set a pw to your login name...
