Windows 10: User account linked to wrong microsoft account

Sometime after making both my wife's computer and my computer discoverable and allowing them to share files, my wife's only user account on her computer was somehow linked to my microsoft account. It shows her user but my account in the settings app. How can I change this so that her computer is linked to her microsoft account? We are using Windows 11 Pro.

Strange Windows 10 User Account issue.

Unfortunately I had done those steps numerous reboots, it just, reappears for no good reason. The base account isn't even a Microsoft account, it's a local account.

I haven't quite tried the built in administrator account on W10, but so far in my experience on my own computer, the built in account seemed to have absolutely no more control than I did on my own.

It's just strange, I go in, it warns me twice about deleting the account, then it's gone. Reboot, and it's back?

EDIT: Just to specify, both command line and Netplwiz both say only HIS account exists on the computer, it doesn't list this rogue account. This is what I meant in my first post about the fact that even Windows doesn't seem to believe it exists, HALF the time. *Frown

 

Remove Microsoft linked account in Windows 10

The troublesome steps are:

3) Remove original Microsoft linked account

4) Link local account to Microsoft account if you wish

I was stuck on those 2 steps. I couldn't find a way in Windows 10 to remove the Microsoft account.

Any ideas?

 

How to rename a user account that is already linked to a Microsoft Account?

I'm adding some solutions to my problem so others may benefit from this information.

Problem: When installing Windows 10 for the first time and immediately linking to your Microsoft account, be aware that Microsoft will automatically name your user account with first 5 letters of your email address and does not give you an option to choose your own user name.

To avoid being annoyed with this and trying to find a way to rename it later, see the solutions bellow instead.

Solution #1:

1. Create a new local user account with the name that you wish.
   
2. Change the new local user account type to administrator (can skip if already have another administrator account).
   
3. Remove the original Microsoft linked account with unwanted Microsoft created name.
   
4. Link new local user account to Microsoft account if you wish.
   

The new user account name will remain the same after linking to your Microsoft account.

Solution #2:

Install Windows 10 with a local user account first.
After Windows 10 installation is complete, go ahead and link the local user account to your Microsoft Account if you wish.

Conclusion (what not to do):
I was trying to rename the user account that was already linked to my Microsoft Account instead of creating a new local user account and I found out this is a very bad idea and should be avoided. It created many errors and all sorts of problems for me.
