    Recently, my hard drive in my laptop crashed. After a new drive was installed, most of my data files could be restored from the failed disk. However, I now have confusion over my user name. In command prompt, listing the directories under users gives me Admin and Public. I believe that previously I had <myusername>, admin and public. When the computer was first turned on, <myusername> was the default account. Now Admin is (being the only account other than Public. However, if I go to Control Panel and click on User Accounts, my user account appears with <myusername> as the user, even though I signed on as Admin. Using Windows Explorer, in the Desktop folder, I see a folder named <myusername> in which I see all my data files (documents, pictures, etc.) Scrolling down to Local Disk (CUser name confusion after replacement of hard drive :), in my Users Folder, I have Admin, Default, and Public, no <myusername> but in the Admin folder, I have all the files I saw listed in <myusername>. In addition, when I am on my local network (the laptop and a desktop) the desktop sees only Admin under laptop users.


    I believe Admin and <myusername> are the same but are referenced under different names in applications. As I now start to reinstall lost software (Vixual FoxPro 8 and Windows Studio 10), they ask for my user name but I do not know what name to give. Is there some way I can reconcile all this?


    I am tempted to set up a new account named <username> (if Windows 10 will let me since in either the left or right hemisphere of its brain it thinks I AM <myusername>), transfer all the data files to this new account, give the new account administrator rights, and then make the new account the default account (again if Windows 10 will allow me)


    Any guidance anybody?

    Hi Bill. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

    Did you reinstall Windows (which isn't mentioned at all) or just replace a data drive?

    To have an Admin account named Admin you'd either have to name it that yourself, or enable the emergency Built-In Hidden Administrator which is named that. Did you do that? See here:

    If so what I'd do now is sign into the Admin account, create a new Admin Local Account or use your MS Account if that is preferred:

    Sign into the new Admin Account, Move your files over to the User folders, test all programs run correctly, then when ready hide the Built-In Administrator as it can only be used for emergencies.

    If no Built-in Admin is enabled then try to change the Admin account to the name you want this way:

    • On which cases do you receive the startup error?
    • Aside from replacing the hard drive, have you made any significant changes to your device prior to this happening?
    • Have you tried plugging in the replaced hard drive to another computer to check if the same thing occurs?
