Windows 10: User pofile cannot be loaded

Some applications kept freezing so I used the power button to shut down the laptop I do this often.Then when I turned on the computer this screen appeared. All of the background files disappeared except for some application icons. The files in local drive and c drive are still there.I had this problem about 2 months ago and at that time I think I fixed it by deleting or resetting recent major update. Someone had posted similar situation so I followed the manual given to that guy. I couldn't find the article this time so I couldn't remember how to fix this. How do I login to my original backg

The other reason I suggested this is that users can add characters to their username that are not alphanumeric (e.g. user*). This confuses things somewhat when looking at the list.

Hello,

When attempting to login to my computer, I get the following message:

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in.

User profile cannot be loaded."

I referred to this Help article,You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error
message,

but the only difference is I only have one user profile on this computer. So, I can't login with another user to go through the steps listed in this post.

Any suggestions?

I am using registry editor from command prompt. Drilled down to c:windows\system32\config inside the Load Hive dialog window. Have selected (checked box) the SAM file; clicking on Open opens error message that says:


SAM
This file is in use.
Enter a new name or close the file that's open in another program.

I am at a loss, since I am not running any other program!

Any suggestions?

The SAM file is listed as being 64KB file size.
