Windows 10: User State Migration Tool Config.xml - Exclude OneDrive Folders

I've been tasked to write up a documentation for my colleagues about the potential of using USMT. I know OneDrive sort of eliminates much of the need of USMT, but there's still a desire to use USMT as a precaution to catch everything in the system.


I have tried /local only, and building a custom config.xml to migrate everything except everything my OneDrive folder, but nothing is working. Can someone help me with a custom.xml file to exclude my OneDrive. I've done some extensive googling on this subject and haven't been able to find anything that works.


What I currently have is an xml file that has this as its contents:

File History won't exclude folders

I just tried to exclude C:\Users\Donny\Downloads using the legacy control panel File History interface. When I clicked "Select Folder" the folder was added to the excluded folders list. When I clicked "Save changes" and went back into the excluded folders
list, C:\Users\Donny\Downloads was not listed at all.

So certainly not fixed for me.

Exclude OneDrive from backup

We understand your concern and we will try to provide the assistance that is required to resolve the issue.

I would like to inform that in Windows 10 Sky Drive has converted into One Drive. As per your query, I am led to believe that you wish to remove/exclude OneDrive from the list of backup files. If that is the case follow the steps that are mentioned below
and check if it helps.

Exclude files from Backup.

1. Open Control Panel by right-clicking on the Start Menu and choosing
Control Panel. Click or tap System and Security,
and then tap or click File History.

2. To exclude some folders in your libraries so they do not get backed up, on the left, choose
Exclude Folders.

3. Choose the file, folder or location that you wish to exclude and click on
Add.

4. Once you have added the desired file, click the back arrow to get back to the
File History window.
