Username when file sharing between Win10 computersd

I typically setup my two Win10 computers to login to my Microsoft account, and the user name for a Microsoft account has to have both a first name and last name. In my case the name is Bud Tripp. So then I want to share files between my computers, giving me full control of the files in the folders I share. To do that, I have to open properties on the folder I want to share and specify which users should have what kind of access to the folder. Normally, a user is specified by computername\username where username is the name used to login. But with the microsoft login, there are two names, first and last. What name do you use to add users when sharing folders?

    :)

    Sharing a folder

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I appreciate your time and patience to work on this issue.

To know the username of your computer, please follow the steps mentioned below:

    1. Type Command prompt in the search bar.
    2. Right click on the Command prompt icon and select Run as Administrator.
    3. Type whoami in Command Prompt window and press Enter.
    4. You will find the username of the computer, use the username and your password to access the file from the shared folder.

However, if the above steps didn’t help, I suggest you to turn off password protected sharing and check if that helps.

To turn off password protected sharing, please follow the steps mentioned below on your laptop:

    1. Press and hold Windows + R key on the keyboard.
    2. Type Control and click on
      OK
      .
    3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
    4. Click on Change advance sharing settings.
    5. Under All Networks, click on
      Turn off password protected sharing
      .

    Hope it helps.

    File Sharing

    Hi Dwayne,

The ability to share files within your homegroup can be set based on your preference in the HomeGroup settings. For us to identify if the file sharing issue is caused by the update or an option not being retained in the HomeGroup setting, we'd like to ask
for additional details. Please answer the following:

    • Aside from installing an update, have you also made any recent changes to the HomeGroup settings?
    • What specific update have you installed before the file sharing stopped working? To check the Update history, follow these steps:
    • On the Search bar, type Settings.
    • Open the Settings app from the search result.
    • Click Update & security and check the Windows Update section.
    • Click the Update history link.
    • Have you already checked if the file and printer sharing is enabled in the
      Advanced sharing settings
      in the Control Panel?
    • What build and version of Windows 10 are you using?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you tried based on the threads that you've read?
For initial troubleshooting, you can run the built-in troubleshooter for HomeGroup by following the steps below:

    • On the Search bar, type Troubleshoot.
    • Open the Control Panel from the search result.
    • Click View all and locate HomeGroup.
    • Click HomeGroup and follow the on-screen guide to run the troubleshooter.
We hope to hear from you soon.
