Using Kaspersky Security Cloud FREE Antivirus With Windows 10 Updates

I have several Windows 7 machines and use Kaspersky Security Cloud Free and find it very comprehensive and low on system resources. On my Windows 10 machines I rely on Defender and in my opinion the jury is out and hasn't come up with a verdict yet as to its competence.. One of my Windows 10 machines has been acting oddly but nothing I can be 100% confident of. What I do know is that trying a full scan on the suspect machine takes hours and i give up after its supposedly processed over one million files ! I don't use the machines much either, so do not have a million files on any one machine. This is where Kaspersky steps in . i would like to instal it on at least one of the machines and i understand that it will automatically disable Defender in the process. I have read when using something other than Defender it can sometimes cause problems with Windows Updates unless that is a myth. If it is indeed true would it be possible to use the "pause protection" option that comes with Kaspersky to overcome this, or would I need to disable it further. Pausing Kaspersky changes the icon in the tray from green to red.

    :)

Security Centre reports Kaspersky and Windows Defender turned off

In Windows Settings / Update and Security it only has Windows Defender in the list on the left hand side, this reports "The settings for Windows Defender Antivirus aren't available because it is turned off"; then gives the option to Turn on Windows Defender Antivirus.

In old-style Control Panel / Security and Maintenance, under the Security heading, it reports Windows Defender Antivirus and Kaspersky Internet Security are both turned off, and gives a button View Antivirus Applications. This shows the dialogue box I mentioned in the OP which lists the two installed virus protection applications: Kaspersky Internet Security - Off, Windows Defender Antivirus - Snoozed.

Kaspersky reports Your Computer is protected and can be seen in Task Manager to be running and consuming resources.

As Windows - falsely - claims neither is running there's no option to turn one off.

I'm wondering whether it started with this week's Windows updates.

I might try uninstalling and re-installing KIS to see if it makes any difference.
