Various, regular BSODs/crashes, difficult to pin down.

Over the last few months I've been getting regular BSODs and crashes. They errors have survived two major Windows updates (8 to 8.1, to 10) and a PSU (old 500w to aerocool 600w) and Graphics Card replacement (from an old 6950 to an r9 390). I can't really pin them to any particular activity. It can happen several times in one day, or I can have several days where it never occurs. It can happen at any time (whether gaming, or while the computer is just left idling). Sometimes I don't get a visible BSOD - the computer just crashes and restarts.

I downloaded Bluescreenviewer, and most (certainly not all) the errors seem to be SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, and they all point to ntoskrnl.exe. Google seems to suggest my display driver is the most likely culprit, so I have tried a clean driver install (using DDU). I have also tried windows memory diagnostic, updating as many drivers as I can, scanning for malware using malwarebytes. Beyond that, I don't really know where to begin, so any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

    :)

    Regular BSOD crashes

I guess I should update this. I'm not 100% sure how, but I think I fixed this, so I'll just list what I did in chronological order.

    Reformatted HDD - Still Crashed

Removed one stick of RAM - Still Crashed

Swapped that RAM with the one I removed - Stopped Crashing

Installed Firefox - Started Crashing again

    Uninstalled Firefox - Stopped Crashing

So, I guess it was somehow related to Firefox? It's been about a week with no crashes.

    Memory.dmp has been uploaded, btw.

Also uninstalled the program that I thought was using that driver, but it's still in my drivers folder and can't be deleted as it's still in use. I even tried safe mode.

    Hi zyzk,

    Welcome to the 10forums.

Warning Programs that claim to update your drivers install either the wrong or corrupted drivers.
If you have installed any driver with Driver Booster 3, please remove them as it may cause trouble.

Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

    • Uninstall Daemon Tools
    • Download the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
      • Double click the executable to open it
      • Click on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window.

Please test your memory using MemTest86+ and update/remove Google Chrome.

MemTest86+ needs to be run for at least 8 passes for conclusive results. Set it running before you go to bed and leave it overnight. We're looking for zero errors here. Even a single error will indicate RAM failure.

Thanks for the response, I've got rid of the drivers and will ditch chrome for a while to see if that helps. I'll give memtest86 a shot when I have the chance. I can have days without any issues so I'll give it a while before I mark as solved (if, fingers crossed, it is) *Smile
