    VDI Optimizations -- Need help identifying a few Reg Keys (Win10 20H2)


    Greetings all,

    I'm working on optimizing my org's VDI environment and was looking at suggested settings from Microsoft here:

    There are a couple registry tweaks that are listed and I couldn't find any information regarding what the actual registry change does for the following registry key names:

    ShellState HKLM\Temp\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
    ShowCompColor HKLM\Temp\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

    In the document, it advises to set ShellState to 240000003C2800000000000000000000
    and ShowCompColor to 1

    Would anyone know what these key names pertain to and what the suggested tweak would change?

    Long story cut short... and this may be a far to simplistic approach but here goes......

    I'm a great fan of Windows own Disk Imaging utility that is included with W10 BUT I have encountered one minor and one major issue. It seems that a restored image is missing some vital Windows files (this is a bug and has been proved on x86 and x64 systems running public release and latest insider builds). The minor issue is that Windows Update history (just the history list of installed updates) is not restored and secondly, user created photo albums are also not being restored. That is a major issue. All you get is blank grey tiles with no content

    What I Need Help With

    The registry includes a 'FilesNotToBackup' key. All the keys associated with this are in the images below. Would anyone have any idea where the above data for the missing albums might reside within Windows, and would you be able to identify that location as being one of the keys here.

    I commented on this problem to Macrium and shortly afterwards received a nice reply suggesting to try again but this time with a 'VSS option' selected as shown in the image below.

    After trying this a couple of times I can tentatively say that this seems to overcome the issue and that the problem is not present when now making images and restoring them.

    Full marks to Macrium for responding so swiftly.
