Windows 10: Verification code, suddenly being asked for it after maybe 20 years

After being a subscriber for over 20 years I suddenly was asked for my password (after being switched to a pin a few months ago) and a verification code which doesn't say how to find one. The box that says "use a different verification option" just cycles back to a blank box to enter verification code. (This is insane. I run a law office with a deadline. This is going to give me a stroke). Where do I find such a code. Microsoft just auto renewed me a week ago.

This reply is not helpful because it does not address the question. The asker wrote that 2-step verification requires the code to be entered routinely even though the box has been checked to not ask for a code again.

Instead of explaining why the browser is behaving inconsistently by continuing to ask for a 2-step code and how to fix the problem, you have responded by explaining what 2-step verification is.

I have the same problem as the asker. If you know the answer please provide it. Thank you in advance!

 

Turning off 2 step verification

i have the 2 step verification DISABLED under my settings yet when i try to retrieve mail it keeps asking me to logg into google and it takes me thru process and gives me an authentication code. What must i do with this code? I dont want the 2 step verification!!!

With 2-Step Verification, you’ll protect your account with both your password and your phone. 2-Step Verification can help keep bad guys out, even if they have your password. So during sign-in, you can choose
not to use 2-Step Verification again on that particular computer. From then on, that computer will only ask for your password when you sign in.

Turn off 2-Step Verification to avoid the verification pop up.
