Very long login time on some user accounts

    Hi everyone,

I share a desktop computer with another family member. We have two user accounts, "Matt" (mine) and "John". Both are administrator accounts. Two days ago, when John logged in after I was done using the computer, the "Welcome" screen took way longer than usual (probably ~30s), and was followed by a couple minutes of a completely black screen (with a cursor) before finally showing the desktop. This problem on his account has persisted ever since.

The computer is otherwise perfectly responsive and usable, the boot time is very short, and I can still log into my account in a few seconds. It's also possible to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the task manager in the black screen phase, and it seems to show nothing unusual and very low CPU activity.

I've tried the following, but I'm not sure what to do next:
    • Boot in safe mode: this solves the problem (but I don't know what to do with that)
    • Create another administrator account: the new account has the same problem as John's.
    • Disable every startup program with the task manager (when logged in as John): doesn't solve the problem

The one thing I remember doing that day that may have changed some system configuration was installing KeePass 2. I've removed it since.

Please ask me if you need any other information.

Any pointers would help, thanks a lot!

    :)

Windows 10 Creators Fall Update Problems (August 2017)

My PC automatically installed the Windows 10 Creators Fall Update today.

It took a very long time to install, involving a number of restarts.

    Eventually it appeared to complete.

When I attempted to login for the first time, things appeared to get stuck on the login page with the 'rotating circle of dots' icon.

It was stuck for many minutes.

It looked as if something had hung, so eventually I hit the reset button.

The next time I tried to login, the same thing happened, only this time, after hanging on the login page for a while, the screen went completely black!

I left it for a while but again it appeared to be hung.

Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del allowed me to launch Task Manager.

Several background process were running. I could see nothing that looked like an update process. Nothing was using excessive CPU.

Eventually I restarted the system again.

This time I tried logging into a different user account.

    Same problem as before.

After two or three further attempts, the system finally allowed me to login and things now appear to be running normally.

    My questions are...

Have other users experience this issue?

Is the problem that the update takes a long time to complete?

How is the user supposed to know when it has finished?

Does it always take a very long time before a user can log in after the update?

If so, then why is there not some sort of progress indication or warning message?

I think the way this update was handled is very poor.

  3. Removing deleted user account from login screen

    Hey guys,

I am a long time Mac user just started with a Windows Surface 3, I picked it up second hand and to be honest I am very impressed.

I am however running into issues.

As I mentioned I picked it up second hand, so I installed windows 10, added a new admin account and removed all the other accounts.

However when it restarts it asks for the old login first, and tells me the password is incorrect. I login my account and the old user account is not were to be found.

    It is not in C:\users

it is not in the selection of user in the control panel. I cannot find the user on the machine at all, however it still asks for login on restart. It is only a little thing but it is driving me mad!

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks for the suggestion! Fast start is enabled on the computer, and if I understand the article you linked correctly, it has to be enabled for either all accounts or none, since it accelerates boot, not session initialization.

Good point! If you have it enabled then it could be that when John shuts down there is a problem that prevents the system shutting down properly so that it starts up without Fast start.

Look at your reliability history and see if there are any clues there.
