Very slow file transfer from hyper-v to host drive

I have my hard drives connected using enhanced mode options to a hyper-v vm (10 pro). I have always had issues with slow file transfer, and was pointed down route of setting up folders as network shares, and I got much faster file transfer times.

However, I am trying to copy the uup folders and getting very low file speeds e.g 100 kb/s at times r less varying up and down wildly. I know there are thousands of files, so I guess this is having a massive overhead. Any ideas how I can speed this up?

    :)

Secure file share with between host and hyper-v guest

I have a windows 10 host running hyper-v. I want to share the files that are on the host securely with a hyper-v vm without having to copy the files, i.e. the file share is on the host not the guest.

Current method is to set up a file share on the host and disable authentication for ALL file shares, this is so that I do not need to store the host account
credential on the VM which would be a risk. I then set up a internal virtual switch in hyper-v and disable files sharing protocal on ALL other network interfaces on the host. I not sure this is secure but its defiantly not very elegant for such a seeming
    simple problem.

I can see it causeing problems in the future when we need another files share on the host for a differnet reason.

Is there a simpler, less invasive way to do this?

    Hyper-V, Windows 10 and Transfers

I upgraded my Windows 10 Home recently to Windows 10 Pro to use Hyper-V for legacy software. I set up Hyper-V without too much difficulty, installed Windows XP as the operating system, and everything operated fine. Then I discovered Hyper-V seems to be
user-hostile when it comes to transferring files from the host PC to the VM. Most of the help I found on the internet was highly technical and/or written several years ago when Hyper-V rolled out on Windows 8 or 8.1.

Microsoft's VPC 2007 was a wonderful, intuitive piece of software. I miss it. Do you have step-by-step instructions in simple English for configuring Hyper-V to share documents with the host PC, and vice versa? Do you have any insight whether a simplified
fix is coming in the near future?

This is what I have been trying - just very slow on uups folders. I am sure issue is related to the vast number of files.

I don't create my own ISO, so I have no UUPS files to test with, sorry*Sad

Just copied a large iso - much faster but still slow - around 3 minutes.

Not a solution to slow copying but you could leave the UPPs where they are.

Make a Temp VHDX (10GB or so), attach it to your VM and put the UPP conversion tool in there. You can point the tool at the directory containing the UPPs (in SoftwareDistribution or wherever) and it will make the ISO in the Temp VHDX.

You can then shut down and detach the Temp VHDX. Then you can either mount it in the host or another VM to use the ISO.

Good idea - I will try that.

Actually. although slow, copying the iso is not that arduous. The key trick was to produce iso in hyper-v, not copy all the files to host. Takes longer to produce iso but that is less of an issue as I can leave hyper-v running in background.

    Cheers pal for a workaround.

This is still the fastest way to copy from Hyper-V vm to host:

In elevated command prompt, assign drive ID for a host share and copy.

Thanks - I will try this. Actually, I discovered slow file copying from Hyper-V to host was not the issue. There is something wrong with my Host install that craps out when I try to copy the folders with all the UUP files. I would try a repair upgrade but with CU round the corner, I will wait.

As you will probably remember (;-)) my host OS is PRO N, so I do not have a 15063 iso as (is this still true in fact?) N Insider versions do not exist.

I also have a PRO dual boot with 15063, and I will see if that works OK.

    Hi folks --

Not an answer to the above thread - but just added here purely for information

Those of you using VMWARE with Windows HOSTS and VM's - you can achieve speeds of 300 Mb/s or faster by using Storage spaces on the HDD you want to share and simply share it with the VM.

Of course if your share is via wifi then the speed will drop considerably depending on the speed and quality of the wifi.

If you are using connection via a "Virtual ethernet adapter" this should be capable of 1 - 10 Gib/s and so will be fast enough.

For really large folders / files say data drives > 2 TB the Windows NTFS standard file system isn't really good enough any more - Storage spaces work brilliantly. I think these can be used also with HYPER-V.

    @Kari on that one though.

    Cheers

I don't know what's happened, if it's build 16176 or something else, but I cannot complain anymore about the transfer speed between Hyper-V host and virtual machines.

This is what I get when using net use X: \\HostName\SharedFolder in elevated Command Prompt on VM to set direct network access from VM to a host share, then copying ISO file created on VM with UUPtoISO to host:

I get the same 750 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps from host to VM simply by creating a share on VM, adding it on host in elevated Command Prompt with net use, and using copy / xcopy / robocopy to transfer files instead of File Explorer> Network.
