Very very weird: trouble with MP4 playing in OneDrive

I use the OneDrive website to share photos and videos. Today I uploaded an MP4 video that was produced by the same camera as all the previous videos I've uploaded. Unlike those, however, when I clicked on this one in OneDrive, instead of playing it, OneDrive opened a dialog box asking me where I wanted to download it. The file played fine in Windows 10 Media Player. I checked previously uploaded MP4s in OneDrive to see if there was a systemic problem, but no: those still play. I refreshed the browser window and tried again, with the same result. I did a Web search and found three suggestions, none of which applied. Then, I realized what was different about this file: it was created by trimming the original MP4, using the Windows 10 Photos application. That must be the problem, I figured. So I uploaded the original file—and the same thing happened when I tried to open it. BUT: now the file that I originally uploaded was playable! I could tell it was going to work, because when I refreshed the browser window, the trimmed MP4’s thumbnail now displayed in OneDrive; the original file I trimmed it from did not show a thumbnail. So now I don’t have a problem. But I do have a mystery. What happened?

    :)

    Play MP4 in Media PLayer

I am using mp4 files myself. Rather heavily. The files I have use the native h264 codecs for video and also something pretty standard for audio and they work. MP4 is a container format and I vaguely remember I once had a file, that did not play.

I am not a real expert here, but you can try this:

Download the static Windows version of ffmpeg and check your mp4 file with ffprobe.exe. It will output a bunch of information about that file, including the codecs used inside it. Knowing these codecs is a first step on the way to a solution.

Windows media player will not play mp4!

Who spends $5,000 on a computer to play .mp4s?

In any case, I have lots of .mp4s and they play well on Windows Media Player. If you've got an .mp4 that won't play, here are two suggestions:

1- download another copy of the file; and

2- ask the content provider for help.

Trying to play Mp4 and Avi on N900

thats weird, it should play the MP4 fine, as for AVI you might need to download the extra decoders support for that.

try taking the battery out for 30 seconds after the download to solve the MP4 issue
