Windows 10: Video Editor Questions

Hello everybody, I've been using the built in Microsoft video editor for a while now as it serves my needs pretty well but through my use of it I've run into quite a few walls along the way. The main issue I'm having is that when I'm putting all of my clips into a project, I often run out of storage space because the editor only works on my C: drive, as opposed to my external hard drive on which I store all my clips. Additionally I will have enough storage space to dump all the files, yet for some reason I can't upload them all. For instance, right now I am trying to use 15.2 GB worth of files and I have 19 GB of storage space, and when I try to upload them, it quits halfway through saying I only have megabytes of spare space. If anyone could help me find a resolution to this issue it would be greatly appreciated
