Video routinely freezes during playback under Windows 10

When Windows 10 came out, I upgraded to it as soon as it was allowable.

I had the following issue immediately after upgrading:
    * Every 60 seconds the video of any movie (mkv/mp4/avi) seems to freeze for 1-2 secs, but the audio continues just fine while the video then skips to keep up. It actually looks as if I have paused the video, but continued the audio. The movies/tv shows do not crash and will play till the end.

The tested files work on all other PC's/movie boxes/TV's without any problems, NO other device plays up.

I have tried playing the files off of the network, and off of the HDD, no difference, still has the same issue every 60 secs.

To try to fix this issue, I formatted the HDD, fresh loaded win 8.1 and then upgraded to Win10. I have tried the Win10 inbuilt players, and the 32bit and 64bit of VLC. I have made sure that the HDD/RAM etc are not hitting 100% in the background (turned off prefetch/superfetch). I used windows inbuilt function to check for RAM errors [none found]. I have made sure that I have the latest VIDEO driver. Checked to make sure there are no unknown devices. Tried turning off the inbuilt FN devices (wireless/pad etc). Nothing makes any difference.

The software I have installed is: DirectX9 / WinRAR / WinZip / VLC / FireFox / Flashplayer (firefox) / Java / Primo PDF / Daemon Tools 10 (to load ISO files) / paint.net / notepad ++ / office 2013 / K-Lite v1137 (tested movies/tv shows before loading K-Lite and problems did exist)... All these programs are loaded on my neighbours laptop as well (as I upgraded it for her) and it plays everything fine even though she has a cheap ASUS that seems to take double the time of my laptop to do anything.

I would sell it, but I need it for studies, and my young daughter likes to watch videos and play minecraft on it (NOT loaded back on since the fresh install). So if I sold this crap, I probably could not afford another decent one that will do what we need.

    Any help appreciated.

    :)

Video freezes for ~1sec every minute.

As described by someone else in this thread, video (both streaming and played locally) will freeze
for about a second at regular intervals (1 minute or so) on a laptop (in my case it's an old Acer 5742zg with P6100 & GT420M) with Windows 10 installed.

Disabling battery seems to be the only viable workaround
    (<-- my post).

Anyway, I was wondering (groundlessly hoping?) if there is any chance whatsoever for this problem to be fixed.

    Regards,

"I have made sure that I have the latest VIDEO driver."

I dunno, lousy video performance often follows from having the Microsoft Basic drivers installed.

The latest ones available from nVidia are:

    Drivers | GeForce

(These are the 64 bit drivers 341.81. I don't know whether you need 32 or 64 bit. I also don't know the best download site for Australia.)

If that's not it, I don't know what to suggest. My older, crappier laptop (2008, AMD QL60 CPU, nVidia 8200m g graphics) seems to do OK with the limited video I've tried on it. It may help that I replaced the HD on it with a leftover SSD.)

Sadly I already have 341.81 video driver loaded.

Have you tried using a different player, such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic?

When you reinstalled W8 did you try a video before installing W10 again?

Ok. Here is what I tried:
    * Format
    * Install Win7 (using the original KEY for Win7)
    .....Problem with video exists
    * Format
    * Load Win8.1 (and basic updates, plus Visual Effects settings on "Adjust for best performance" as I had previously)
    * Took note of CPU/MEM/HDD % ave usage
.....Problem with video does NOT exist
    * Upgrade to Win10
    * Did not change Visual Effects as I assumed they carried over during install
    .....Problem with video exists
    * Changed Visual Effects settings to "Adjust for best performance"
    .....Problem with video exists

So I looked at the average CPU/MEM/HDD again and calculated that the CPU and MEM were using about 10-15% more.

So I thought it was power related. I tried:
    * Take power cord out (run from battery)
    .....Problem with video exists
    * Turn off and remove battery, plug in cord and run from mains only
.....Problem with video does NOT exist

Obviously under Win10, my battery (original and probably purchased in 2010) does not have enough juice to run movies. I guess I need a new one (sadly they are over $100 here in Australia).

    Thanks for the help guys.

  10. hopefully Gamber71 will see this(as will anybody else who needs it)

first, I was having similar issues on 3 systems, head over to Windows 10 codecs - Windows 8.1 codecs - Windows 7 codecs grab the latest codec pack from there, install it, then when both of the settings app windows for 32 and 64bit are open, check the box for "use shark007's settings", also recommend installing MPC-BE from his tools page (with 64bit with madvr would be my top choice u can always revert to EVR rather then madvr if you want or need to.)

this isnt really a battery issue from my exp, for whatever reason though, i have seen what you describe with battery removed helping.

as to a battery, check ebay, you will probably find a battery for your laptop MUCH cheaper on ebay(as i did with my mothers 3 laptops)

IF this dosnt work, and this will sound weird but, grab DDU (display driver uninstaller) and reboot into safemode, let it remove ALL your video drivers, then restart, and install the latest drivers for your laptop from LaptopVideo2Go Forums

now, you may be find with the drivers from the chipset makers site but, sometims they wont work with mode switching and such on laptops due to power saving features and settings, with that setup your very likely having issues with it trying ti use the nvidia video rather then i5's built in mode switching.

good luck, hope what i suggested helps *Smile

Instead of taking out the battery, disable it in Device Manager:

That way you will still have protection of the battery acting like UPS, but of course Windows won't be aware of it any more.

I have the same problem and I don't think it's ever going to be fixed. My laptop is an old TravelMate 5742ZG which still serves me well, but it's not actively supported any more by Acer, and Microsoft doesn't seem to care much about older hardware (talk about age discrimination *chuckle ), so they are not going to fix it either (even though they practically FORCED me to upgrade). It's very annoying, especially knowing it's not really a hardware problem (after all, it worked flawlessly in Windows 7) and so it COULD be fixed. Oh, well...

I can confirm that this odd problem is fixed when either removing the battery or disabling it. In fact, my intuition is that this is a problem with the Microsoft driver for the battery, since now I'm running the laptop with battery (after disabling the driver) and the videos don't freeze.

So the question is, there is other driver that we could use for these?

  14. I just registered here to thank everyone on this thread for this solution. Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10 my system has been plagued by this annoying problem. In my case I can confirm that yes when playing a video it does stall for a second or two, at precise 60 second intervals. I didn't perceive that as the problem initially - it was more that my computer paused (froze, stalled, stuttered, delayed) regularly irrespective of what I was doing. I wouldn't lose keystrokes - but the stuttering was infuriating and made working on the system a chore. Every now and then I would search for a solution on the internet - but searching for stalls, stutters, micro freezes, micro pauses, micro delays etc. gets you so many false positives. Success finally came when I narrowed my search to my specific computer - Acer Aspire 5741G - and found someone reporting the video freezing every 60 seconds. I checked and amazingly (to me) my video stalls were occurring at precisely that frequency too. Now I had something that was much more google-able. I found this thread, and the fantastic workaround involving disabling the battery driver (who would have thought?). It's been two days now and my computing experience has received a new lease of life. Thank you.
