Video sprawls beyond screen boundaries at any resolution

I was helping a friend with her computers today and part of that involved connecting her newer desktop machine to a different large monitor than the one it had been connected to. The monitor is connected to the computer via HDMI and we can see Windows on the screen but Windows sprawls beyond the physical edges of the screen in every direction. That means we see only the top little bit of the task bar and the Windows button is beyondn the left edge of the screen and the clock is beyond the right edge of the screen. I've tried a few different screen resolutions but the image ALWAYS sprawls so that all four edges are lost. What do I need to do so that this sprawling stops?

I'm probably going to kick myself when I hear the answer but I'm darned if I can think of a solution.

    :)

    Windows 10 Desktop Resolution Problem

I have a 1920 x 1080p monitor, and recently upgraded to Windows 10. Unfortunately, what the computer believes to be 1080p and what actually is 1080p are different. When I set the resolution to 1080p, the screen extends outside the boundaries of the actual
screen. Meaning some desktop icons are hidden in a nether space that cannot be accessed by me, as well as the taskbar.

This may also be helpful: While I was still on Windows 7, I faced a similar problem when I updated my video card drivers.

So is this AMD's fault, Microsoft's, or my own? And how can I fix it?

Does the monitor have settings in it's menus for scaling? The new Samsung monitor I just bought 2 days ago, for example, has HDMI modes for "PC" and "AV". I'm speaking about the monitor menu that is accessed from physical buttons on the monitor itself. There might also be options in there to adjust size as well and centering.

I was just coming back to mark this problem as "solved". I had suggested my friend try various buttons on the remote to get the screen to resize itself and the first button she tried did the job; she just told me via email.

Thanks for jumping in to answer!
