    Was using iTunes with the visual effects mode turned on (shows particles/flashes/etc depending on music playback, you know, like windows used to have in their media player)
    It was kinda laggy so I restarted iTunes, but this time I right clicked it and selected "run with powerful NVIDIA processor" (Lenovo Z50-70 laptop with a hybrid GPU system, intel HD and NVIDIA GPU's together)
    everything went smooth, until the song was over and it started the next one. Screen went black, music kept playing, but you could error Windows 10 error sound-effects over it. This kept going on for a minute or 2, until the system went into a BSOD, tagged with VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, and something after it, I think it was (igdkmd64.sys), but I'm not sure.

    I know it's probably a GPU crash, specifically the Intel HD Graphics GPU, but how is that possible since iTunes ran with the NVIDIA GPU?
    After upgrading to Windows 10, I did have some issues with making the Intel HD Graphics run. I had to reïnstall it and I updated it to the latest version Intel offered, but I guess it now made this BSOD to occur.

  2. Can anything go wrong if I uninstall my display adapter in safe mode?

    In your opinion, should this fix the video_tdr_failure (atikmpag.sys) problem?

    The issue you are facing is due to the Graphics Switching Technology used by different OEMs to provide performance and battery life when required. Make sure that you install only the graphics drivers provided by Lenovo because the OEM's do certain tweaks to make sure the required conditions are achieved.
    Kindly follow the below steps -
    • Kindly uninstall the currently installed display drivers using the Display Driver Uninstaller (**LINK**) and then uninstall the currently installed graphics drivers.
    • Reboot the system.
    • Install both (NVIDIA & INTEL) graphics drivers from these **LINK** (Intel) & **LINK** (NVIDIA).

    Note:- Editing registry can be dangerous. Make sure you follow the exact steps.

    Thank you for replying!

    I do have some little question before I proceed:
    If I remember correctly, Windows 10 will automatically try to find and install graphics drivers that are missing. (which happend before on other win10 devices when uninstalling display drivers, and it also did on this laptop after upgrading, because the older NVIDIA driver couldn't be carried, so the system downloaded and installed it again on its own) How do I prevent this from happening, so it won't interfere?

    Also, the concern above might be prevented when, as the DDU app you gave me recommends, the uninstall procedure is performed in Safe Mode. Do you agree with that? That might indeed prevent most issues, but don't I need an internet connection for install procedure?

    Hi Sonar637 ^_^,

    Like I said in my previous post, the OEM's do certain tweaks with the drivers. Windows 10 installs the basic drivers like other versions of Windows. When you install other driver, you don't have to worry about the previously installed driver. Once you install this driver, please don't install any other version of the graphics drivers until and unless it is from your laptop's manufacturer.

    Yep. I would suggest you to perform the DDU uninstallation in Safe Mode. And nope, you don't need an internet connection for the install/uninstall procedure.

    Just download the drivers from the links (which I mentioned in my previous post) before performing the uninstallation.

    Ok, I did as you told.
    Used DDU (in safe mode), uninstalled both drivers, rebooted back in safe mode and installed both drivers. Everything went flawless.
    However, I do have a few concerns.

    When booted back to normal, everything still worked fine, but Windows Update is downloading and installing a "newer" version of both drivers, which might probably cause the whole problem all over again...

    Secondly, the NVIDIA driver did not install PhysX with it (something that can come in handy for gaming). You said I should not update both of these drivers afterwards, as that might cause the conflicting again, but as far as I can tell, Lenovo did not create their native clients, nor their native version of the drivers. The setups/installers were stock, from the manufacturers themselves. I especially recognize the NVIDIA one.

    What should I do now? I don't know an actual way to test if the BSOD will reoccur.

    Edit: It "updated" the intel drivers, but it's still the same version. (not updated?)
    The attempt to update the NVIDIA driver failed, with error 0x80070002. However, as I said, I think I could just download from NVIDIA.com, as that should be exactly the same process.

    Edit2: It seems that the NVIDIA is actually not installed. (when scanning for my current driver version through Java on NVIDIA.com, it didn't find any installed driver. I do not see an NVIDIA Control Panel installed either (nor the option to run an application with the "powerful nvidia processor". Only thing I see is a driver version installed in the list of installed programs.
    Device manager also reports there's no NVIDIA driver installed.
    This was not the case back when I first got my laptop, back on windows 8.
    I think I just have to find the driver version for my GPU (GeForce 840M) on nvidia.com and download and install from there.
    As I can remember, the BSOD gave "(igdkmd64.sys)" at the end, which seems to indicate to a malfunction to the Intel driver. I can agree with that, because I update that driver through an intel update utility, and it didn't go very smooth, as I can remember.
