  2. My Windows 10 O.S consumes much data

    Hello,

If you're using Windows 10 build 1709, there's an available option to check the data usage. Follow the steps below:

    • Go to Settings > Select Network & Internet.
    • On the left panel, click Data usage > Hit View usage details.

Keep us updated with the result.

    Data usage definition

Hi. This may be simple, but I wanted to confirm.

I'm on windows 10, if I go to the wifi symbol in the bottom right tray and select 'network and internet settings', I can then go to data usage.

This shows total data usage of the last 30 days, I can also view usage details and see data usage by app - e.g. by chrome, dropbox, outlook individually.

What I wanted to check is that this is upload and download, as opposed to just download.

    Thanks

    Lou

After some digging i've found that data related to data consumption are stored in
    C:\Windows\System32\sru\Srudb.dat

I have resetted the data in the following way

    - rename sru folder (try few times because Windows is registering data in it...)
    - once renamed cut/paste srudb.dat in a backup folder (if you want to restore it in future..)
    - open notepad and save empty document with name srudb.dat in the folder
    - restore folder name to C:\Windows\System32\sru\

I' have'nt found no problem doing it but if you do it do it at your own risk.

    Hope to have been helpfull

Hello Fla78, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

Thank you for the pointer. After playing with it for a bit. I found it easier to boot into Safe Mode (without networking) to be able to easily delete the contents of the sru folder. Afterwards, boot back into normal mode, and data usage is reset.

I'll write up a new tutorial for this today sometime, and will post back with a link to it when ready.

  9. So I had the same issue with my Surface3 that I just bought this weekend. My AT&T cellular connection downloaded my entire dropbox on my first charge which was needless to say a shock.
Build 10565 (and probably earlier - Im in the fast ring) gives you the ability to limit and reset your data usage. It's under settings>network>cellular or >data usage. For instance, I set a maximum of 250 MB for the next five days. I haven't found a way to disable so either for any particular applications like a iPhone can but I'm sure something can be developed at some point.

Definately seems like a vast improvement from the vanilla windows 10 installed when I first bought it (?build 10240 or something)
