I had a different experience. I used the phone activation screen ("slui 4") to reactivate. The automated agent could not give me the activation string and forwarded me to a first level tech, who then forwarded me to the next level. That technician remoted into my computer and did some magic. I am now activated with a new key. It looks like a retail key. My point is that Microsoft can and does indeed help solve this problem. If you encounter this again, try using phone activation to start the conversation.

I know an OS is simply supposed to provide an interface for people to get things done, but my inner nerd enjoys using an OS for its own sake.

Windows 10 is just more fun. I am glad that I made the upgrade.

  3. Partly it is a holdover from XP days when the installer used a file-copy installation method and left "trash" in portions of some sectors. That issue has gone away since Vista when Microsoft changed to an image-copy installation method that guarantees only intended data (even if zeros) in all sectors written to. For the rest, it does clean up the accumulation of programs and files that were never tested with Windows 10 and could affect performance in some way. It is called taking out the trash. When I clean installed on one of my veteran systems the "trash" was nearly 300 GB of "stuff." The system was a lot more nimble afterwards. So it depends on how you have been using your system whether or not a clean install is helpful. If mostly for emails, browsing, and games then you probably don't need to do it. If you have used all sorts of arcane little programs over time then you definitely should consider it, although I recommend using Reset this PC in Settings/Recovery first. It is a clean installation from within Windows and gives an option to keep your data files. If you don't like that result, you always have the clean install option open. The real hardcore folks on this issue insist on completely reformatting just to make sure. It is their comfort zone.

I used the free upgrade just the other day and so far I'm fairly comfortable with it. Didn't like it all the first day or two but I'm getting used to it as time goes by. It has some very strange quirks but perhaps future updates will correct them.

Also, finding this forum was a huge help to my piece of mind as it feels as though I've found some friends who I can ask for help from time to time and that my friends is a great big plus in the comfort department.

I used to fight these things but if we want computers, then we have to go with the flow for the most part. It's inevitable.

I da no! ...But...was their installs actually 'over' lapped onto 7,8.1? ......I'm a bit confused with your question. last fall I upgraded from XP with a (new pc) after 6 years..(8.1)..All was well thereafter, but I missed the old os XP for a lot of reasons after experiencing this new 8.1... Recently, I took advantage of the 'free' 10...I thought maybe it could be a better experience than 8.1 and closer to the XP I loved.....(XP offered to me, better hands on mechanical than 8.1) but I was wrong! ......I'm now on OS10 and realize this cant change. I could go Linux Apple etc....

Once you 'cross-over' from 7-8.1.....you cant go back...I am reading. BUT......if you do a system recovery on your 8.1 pc......does it return to 8.1? ....I'm not going to test it. 8.1 to 10 hasn't been a reason for me...so I'll like it and shut up!

  9. I just tried to download using a Windows 7 product key that was used to upgrade to 10 and the site gave me an error, saying the key was in use. Make sure you enter a key that is not encumbered.

I tried another key, also used to upgrade to 10 and it gave me error messages twice but on the third try the request was accepted. So keep trying folks.

Me, if I did not loose my Macrium Image of Win 7 , I could have gone back . But I like the performance in 10.

I had the benefit of the Insider program to get accustomed to its ways well ahead of release and I predict it will grow on you nicely. Enjoy!

  14. Already have a desktop and laptop on Win10 so I'm staying. My desktop is going to wait a bit because I have to find some driver solutions for music production related devices that are attached. It will eventually go Win10 as well using my free upgrade from Win7 but might be a few months.

Thank's for the encouragement.....but I could control my XP....8.1 and 10 are more likely designed for the 'masses of the stupid' and I can understand that!
