I have an Asus ROG Crosshair VII Hero (WiFi) motherboard and Ryzen 7 2700X CPU, 1 NVMe SSD, 1 M.2 SATA SSD, and an EVGA GTX 1080 Ti graphics card in the PCIe 3.0 X16 slot. Here's my dilemma:

M.2_1 slot will accept SATA or NVMe SSD and will not share any PCIe lanes.
M.2_2 slot will accept only NMVe SSD and if it is occupied, it take 8 PCIe lanes from the PCIe 3.0 X16, making it an 8 lane slot.

According to a couple of websites, including this one:
PCIe 3.0 x8 vs. x16: Does It Impact GPU Performance? | GamersNexus - Gaming PC Builds & Hardware Benchmarks

Running the 1080 Ti in 8 lanes v. 16 lanes really does not affect performance. But, it just really bugs me that the SATA M.2 SSD has to go in slot 1, leaving only slot 2 for the NVMe SSD which is going to take 8 lanes away from the GPU.

So...should I (1) leave well enough alone. or (2) put the SATA M.2 SSD in an adapter that goes into a PCIe X4 slot with a SATA cable to a SATA port, move the NVMe SSD to M.2 slot 1, and restore the full 16 lanes to the 1080 Ti graphics card?

    :)

  2. Clone present nvme pcie ssd to replacement nvme pcie ssd?

I have a 500GB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD (boot drive) that I want to replace with a higher capacity M.2 card.

Where do I put the new SSD during the NVMe to NVMe cloning process? My mobo only has one M.2 slot for NVMe SSD's so do I want to use an external adapter for one of the M.2 cards? If so, do you have a recommendation?

If you have solved this issue for your desktop or laptop I would like your advice on if and what extra hardware you needed during the cloning.

please remember that I am dealing with PCIe NVMe drives ONLY. NO Sata is involved except possibly for a connecting cable from the desktop to an adapter. I am experienced with cloning SATA III drives but cloning NVMe is a little
    new to me.

Computer: Dell XPS 8920, 32GB ram.

Present SSD: KXG50ZNV512G NVMe Toshiba 512GB

New SSD: CT13049074 Crucial P1 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD 1TB (or 2TB if available soon) or similar storage device.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, version 1809.

    PCIe adapter to NVMe SSD

I have a Dell Inspiron 580 desktop circa 2012 running Windows 7. Would like to upgrade to Windows 10 and boot from a new PCIe adapter for NVMe SSD. I understand that I may have to install new NVWe drivers to have BIOS recognize PCIe as a boot drive option.
Am on I the right track? Is this even possible? Any help would be appreciated. TIA

    SATA HDD recognised as SSD

Hi. My SATA HDD is recognised as a SSD and Windows 10 will not perform defragmentation on it as a result; which I appreciate. I've tried many of the prescribed procedures mentioned on forums but to no effect. I'm pretty convinced that the problem lies
in the fact I have installed a SSD in my machine. Windows is recognising the correct size of my SATA HDD however and the SSD isn't showing up quite rightly as its Linux formatted. Using a third party defragmentation program exactly the same problem occurs,
however I was able to defragment my C drive using it as it just warned against it and didn't prohibit me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
