  1. Virtual Smart Card VPN No longer working after upgrading to 20.04

We are using a Virtual Smart Card to authenticate to a RAS VPN.

When I try to authenticate with the virtual smartcard usually I get a prompt to type in my pin.
After I upgraded to 2004 I no longer get prompted to type in my pin and I get an error; "An Internal Error has occurred".

I have since reimaged my laptop with a fresh image of 2004 and I get the same error.

I have confirmed this issue with other users that are on 2004.

Everything working fine on Windows 10 in the past with version 1909 and lower.

    Any Ideas?

    :)

  2. virtual smart card not found

I have a "virtual digitalbadge" on my PC, which, I think, is an implementation of virtual smart card technology. I use it to set up a VPN to my partner company.

When I try to set up the VPN, I often get the message "select a smart cart device". Screenshot:

The Japanese text means "insert smart card". I can't proceed, since I don't know how to "insert" a virtual smart card.

I believe this happens consistently after hibernation; a reboot fixes the problem but is a very poor workaround, since it takes about 15 minutes until my PC becomes usable. Of course I could avoid hibernation, but I hibernate for a reason (i.e. I want to
have the same programs running when I switch my PC on as when I switch it off).

The same happens whenever Internet Explorer wants to check the certificate on the smart card.

Is there a tool, a command, a registry entry, anything that helps me "inserting" the smart card without rebooting? Is there a log file or anything else to find out where the process is broken so that I can fix it?

Disable PIN caching for Virtual Smart Cards

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forum.

Pass-through authentication with smart cards work on domain environments. You may want to go through
Use Virtual Smart Cards to know
more about the same. As this requires expertise in an environment which has a direct two-way trust relationship, I suggest you to post your query in the
    TechNet forums.

VPN client (GUI) not work with (CSP) smart card.

    Hi,

I found a bug, native (GUI) vpn client do not work with a smart card certificate. "A certificate could not be found that can be used with this Extensible Authentication Protocol. (Error 798)".

But if I make .pbk file and run this file I can connect to my VPN server with my smart card and certificate.

Can you check and fix this wrong GUI VPN behavior?

    GUI - settings > network & internet > VPN > VPN connection > Connect > (Error 798)

GUI - Network icon in tray > VPN connection > connect > (Error 798)

Two click on .pbk file > connect > Sign in, enter PIN > OK

    And second bug not feature.

Windows 10 have a feature to choice certificate to login, if are more than one certificate on smartcard, but VPN client must have set certificate "as default" to work. If certificate is not set "as default" error 798 appear even with ".pbk file". But if any
certificate is set "as default", you can not use a choice certificate from smart card for login feature. Ups.

    Bug, feature, bad design?

This bug is in Windows 10 from first build.

I was thinking, Microsoft removed CSP smart card VPN client in Windows 10, but not exactly, I can still use .pbk file.

    Best regards

    JM
