VLC and PowerDVD Crash After Windows 10 Upgrade

My dad upgraded to Windows 10 a few days ago, however, now VLC and PowerDVD crash for some reason... they were working perfectly fine before the upgrade.

For VLC, the video will freeze, but the audio will keep playing, but when you move the cursor to a point in the program, it just closes and crashes. However, there is no error report in the Event viewer.

Likewise, using PowerDVD 15 to play the same video, will completely freeze, both video and audio will freeze. He hasn't tried playing an actual DVD/BD yet.

He plays the video in the "Movies & TV" app and it plays fine.

I'm at a loss for a solution, I've uninstalled VLC and reinstalled it. I use the same two programs and have had no issue.

    :)

How can I get my DVD's to play through the Media Player and not Power DVD?

I can't say what might be the problem with PowerDVD, although it sounds like a codec issue. Media Player in Windows 10 can't play DVD video. Try the free

    VLC Media Player

Windows 10 installed wrong drivers for optic drive

Windows 10 should open DVD data disks, but it won't play DVD movies, you need to install a 3rd party DVD player such as VLC player or PowerDVD

Hmmm, it's odd. The Movies & TV app works fine. My little brother can play games fine as well.

So far it's VLC, PowerDVD and I think Windows Media Player.

I've not had any issues in VLC, etc.

Your issues seem not to be identical, but rather similar. I guess that if you solve it for one of those programmes, you might also have the solution or you might already have solved it for the others. Let's start with VLC player:

Just to make sure: You are using the newest version of VLC player, right? To be honest you have already tried the stuff, which I would have advised you to do. Have you tried in a VLC forum? I guess they are way more experienced with crashes of "their" software than we here are.

Well, it wasn't just VLC, PowerDVD was crashing as well.

I contact Microsoft Support and they said to try resetting Windows, so I did, and I'm reinstalling his primary programs right now, including VLC.

VLC and PowerDVD Crash After Windows 10 Upgrade

I don't have VLC, but PowerDVD 15, Media Player Classic Home Cinema, and Windows Media Player work perfectly with all video formats. The only glitch with PowerDVD is that you have to turn off the True Theater enhancements when playing a BluRay otherwise it gets extrememely choppy. You can leave them on for DVD's and videos though.

Well, redid Windows 10 using the reset function and played a video all the way through in VLC with no issue.

right after i commented last night i started having issues again. It would seem that, for me at least, when a new windows 10 update comes out new nvidia drivers come as well. After the windows 10 update i started having issues again. I noticed that nvidia was prompting an update which after doing seems to have cleared up the issue. If this keeps up in similar fashion I will revert to windows 8 as this is getting a bit ridiculous.

VLC is pretty sensitive to media that has imperfections, also are you using the Tile version, or the desktop version?

Usually what happens is VLC will detect a part of the video file that has a problem, and it tries to fix it. It's worse with AVI files but usually VLC will repair the indexes before it starts playing. Also, the location of the media can affect how it plays, if the media is on a networked drive, sometimes it won't play smoothly. Or, on a HDD that's slower or has bad sectors. I'd start by running CHKDSK on whatever HDD you have your media stored on, make sure there are no bad sectors, Also, make sure it's been defragged/optimized, cos that affects playback.

I run Raxco Perfectdisk 13 on my Windows 8 machine, but it does no work in 10, you need Raxco Perfect Storage. It runs on a schedule, optimizes my drives starting at midnight every night.

VLC and PowerDVD Crash After Windows 10 Upgrade

    Hi there

Try looking at your VIDEO drivers --VLC usually will work with ANYTHING.

Also in the advanced Power Settings there's a setting or two that could influence video performance.

If you've got anything that even THINKS it's NVIDIA video then the chances are you'll get some sort of problems --seems 95% of people who have Video problems are using some type of Nvidia video.

    Cheers

Thanks, I use all NVidia/GeForce. This machine has a GeForce 8400 GS, I run a GeForce 210 on Windows 8, and I have a 78xx series on my Core Duo XP machine. They all run VLC great. The only problems I have with VLC are with the Windows 8 Beta version, which has absolutely NO video output whatsoever, and the Windows 10 tile version which has Video, bit it shows a green line across the bottom of the Video Frame. I also have VLC for iOS v2.2.2 in my iPhones and iPad Mini, and I use those to hook into local video content on my PCs and it works great. I use that version, because Dolby made them remove AC3 and a couple other codecs from the iOS version. I believe the Droid nightly versions are unmolested and can play all formats.

The most use is on my Windows 8 machine with the 210 graphics card. It's pretty cheap, but it has a good HDMI output, and it can kind of play 60fps content. But most of my content are DVD rips from my own collection, I have a few BR extracted out too.

The only problems I get are when the media files have been moved from drive to drive over the years, sometimes an error in replication gives rise to broken frames and I have to run Meteorite on the MKV files. I use something like AVIfix for AVI files, or, I just let VLC fix them, it only takes a few minutes on most cases.

I always mess with the advanced settings, but whenever IO foul something up all I have to do is reset them all, and the default settings usually work great for all content. I never use VLC for Audio, I use Foobar2000 for that.

switching back to windows 8.1 solved the issue. I read something about having multiple monitors and video crashed the other day. Not sure if that is the problem. However i do seem to notice the issue went hand in hand with the windows 10 update. I will stay with 8.1 for a bit and try windows 10 again in a month or so to see if they have fixed the issue. Maybe then I will start looking at my hardware. However I have tried playing video off 3 separate drives which cannot all possibly have an issue. I tried reverting from my new nvidia gtx970 to my old amd 9770 to check if perhaps it was an nvidia problem. No luck same problem. As well tried turning off accelerated video just to check still no fix.
