Windows 10: VM's. Moving to different HDD's and Digital Licences

Just a note to people who perhaps have upgraded to W10 from say W7 and then move to a different HDD when they upgraded from W7 to a W10 VM.

KEEP the original W7 image . You can always create a new licensed W10 system from that if everything goes pear shaped.

The first VM will be fine -- you'll get a digital licence.

Now if you try and move the VM to say an internal SSD from a networked HDD by just copying / cloning the VM either by Clone from vmware or copy the folder with File explorer the digital licence will FAIL.

What you have to do in this case is use something like MACRIUM to backup the VM as per a REAL machine. Then create a NEW VM on the SSD, and then boot from an ISO (the bootable recovery medium from MACRIUM) to restore the image.

Then it's all fine.

(This is for VM's ceated with VMWARE workstation / player).

Activate Windows after booting on another computer

Windows installed on your hdd was activated using the original device. You moved it to another device and it now need a new licence key.

How was the hdd activated on the original device, if it was a digital licence after the free upgrade or pre-installed by the manufacturer then it can't be moved to a new device. It is only activated on the origianl device.

 

Is the Windows 10 Digital License bound to hardware?

I have a Windows 10 VM on a macbook pro. It was updated to Windows 10 during the free upgrade period from Windows 7 so it is has a digital license. The macbook pro is broken so I am trying to move the VM to another machine. Is the license bound to the
hardware? Will I be able to move the VM to a new machine?

 

You really like playing around with VM's it seems like every week or two you create a post about VM's.

Right now i'm playing around with a very professionally made DNS server and it can also act as DHCP server, It will install on most debian distros. It was created to block ads using a Raspberry Pie and hence the name PiHole.

I have had it run without and muss or fuss on Ubuntu 14.04 16.04 server editions, The way I install linux on the VM is by pressing the F4 key at startup and select lite virtual machine and to make life easier I install SSH on it.

It could not be any easier to install as long as you have curl installed it will take care of the rest.

Activation works (provided it's from a legal update) if you temporarily sign on with you Ms account.
Then choose activation after hardware change.

It will present you a device list.
Choose the VM image / hardware

Then it works fine.

You can then go back to using a local account again.

So marking this as solved.
