Windows 10: Volume and brightness keys disabled; probably following 'Win. 10 re-set.

From recollection; both worked with the Fn key; I uninstalled Keyboard and Display "Microsoft Basic" from "Device Manager"; re-started the laptop - and currently only the volume controls work but only with the Fn key. Brightness control is also now disabled from the Settings/Display slider. The only unusual activity since a recent re-set and then fully updated has been with enabling and installing voice-to-text apps.

I understand that you are facing an issue when you tap the brightness or volume key in quick succession. We will look into this for you.

I appreciate you for providing the explanation in your previous response to give us clarity. I would suggest you to check your Keyboard settings for the Repeat delay and the Repeat rate. Alter it based on your requirement and
check if you are facing the issue. To do that, please follow the steps below:

1. Click on Start, type control and open the
   Control Panel.
   
2. Click on the Keyboard, under ‘Adjust your computer’s settings’. This will open the
   Keyboard Properties.
   
3. Under Character repeat, you will be able to find the slider for the
   Repeat delay and the Repeat rate. Alter it accordingly and check if the issue still persists.

please do not respond with unrelated things.

this is not an issue of the tile cache or a driver.

holding down or repeatedly tapping the volume or brightness keys at first leads to normal steps of change, then after a few steps causes an excessive change.

similar to how holding down a letter key after a while outputs a quickly rising amount of that letter, or holding down delete starts slow, and after a while starts deleting text quickly.

this may be a helpful feature for some people, but for me it is unwanted in the case of volume and brightness.

 

No volume bar when changing volume level and changing brightness causing lag

The option for brightness and volume indicator will automatically show on the Windows graphical user interface.

If you face the issue with volume and brightness indicator settings, it may have caused because you are using the ASUS system utilities. I suggest you to open the ASUS system utilities and disable the volume and brightness
indicator and any other Windows related functionality. It is better to disable the ASUS system utility temporarily and check if it is the cause to the issue.

Please be informed that Microsoft has changed level for volume to show as
horizontal level bar not as vertical bar in Windows 10. Click "speaker icon" on taskbar and volume level will appear.

Kindly try the below steps to repair any corrupted files of Windows components and check if it helps.

  Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard, select the
  command prompt (admin).

  Type the following commands one by one and hit Enter key.
  
  Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  
  Sfc /scannow
  

Note: If you are not able to repair some files after performing SFC scan, I suggest you to refer to the point 3 “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details
