Volume Mute Light won´t change color

For my HP computer I can make the F8 key and the right upper corner keys turn orange.
On this computer I can either uninstall the IDT Codec or place the computer in clean boot and turn off non-Microsoft service on boot.

So those are the two things that we are checking on your computer.

Ordinarily I don't suggest installing drivers that were not approved by HP for your configuration and operating system.
You can use a third party application such as drive easy to see if there are any suggested drivers.
Another option is trial and error.
This is the HP web site URL to find any driver:

    L: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp65501-66000/

You can attempt to install a driver and see the impact. It's a CODEC. The CODEC is sp65631. Make sure you choose the appropriate bit 64 or 32 bit. To see whether your computer is 32 or 64 bit type msinfo32 in the left lower corner search. In the pop up view the system type. The CODEC could produce a bsod, fail to install or it could fix the problems. If it bsod or does nothing you can then uninstall it.

  2. Found the sp65631exe on the list and saw that neither hardware or OS definitions match my laptop. Tried to download but could not find any way to do so. Confused, to say the least.

It was trial and error for that codec as in one of your posts you indicated that you did not see it as a HP listed or approved driver for your configuration. Sometimes the older computers do not have drivers updated for the latest windows operating system. On the HP web site they offer drivers for 7 and 8.1 and you indicated that you had looked in that section as well.

These are some of the links on the orange mute light on some HP models and the CODEC:

If the control panel windows troubleshooters have not yet been run please run these:
    Hardware and devices
    Playing audio
    Recording audio
Type control panel in the left lower corner > click large or small icons > click troubleshooting > in the left pane click view all, then run the above three troubleshooters (click advanced and all automatic fixes). Open audio enhancements and play sounds. Advanced tab > test audio (keep or try reinstalling current driver). View detailed information for each troubleshooter.

Let's try a clean boot on your computer to see if there is an impact on the orange light or on performance.
A clean boot turns all non-Microsoft service off on boot. Then when you click on an application it loads. So you get the fastest boot. All bloat ware is turned off. Clean boot is one extreme to have the fastest boot. If there are applications that you regularly use and don't want to wait for them to load after every boot then you can return to msconfig and have any non-microsoft application start on boot.

To perform a clean boot see these two links (one of them has a video):

How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows

    1) type msconfig in the left lower corner search
    2) in the system configuration pop up move the dot from normal startup to selective startup
    3) un-check load start up items
    4) click on the services tab
    5) in the left lower corner check the box to hide all Microsoft services
    6) on the right lower side click disable all
    7) click apply or ok and do not reboot

    8) keyboard: click control + alt + delete keys simultaneously to open the pop up task manager
    9) click on the startup tab
    10) click on the status column to sort so that all of the enable rise to the top
    11) right click every row that has enable and change to disable
    12) reboot

Upon reboot you should be in clean boot
Check the performance during typical computer use.
Reboot and check the shutdown and boot times if you prefer short boot times.
Evaluate the performance for the applications that you use the most.
Evaluate the audio and the orange light to see if there is any change.

At a later time go back to msconfig and click on the manufacturer column so that it sorts alphabetically.
Check only HP services and then reboot.
See if there is any change in the audio or orange light.

The clean boot has disabled applications that can interfere with other applications.
If there is a change then you know that one of the applications that was disabled was misbehaving.
If there is no change then you know that none of the other applications was misbehaving or producing changes in the audio or orange lights.

Earlier you indicated that you ran the HP UEFI diagnostics in extensive mode and found no problems. Also you ran the bios UEFI interactive audio component test and found no problems. Please reconfirm. If there was any question please repeat these diagnostic studies.
If the clean boot finds a change in the audio or a change in the orange light then you can work on isolating the misbehaving service.
If the clean boot does not find a change in performance then you can leave the computer in clean boot, return to normal boot, or use selective boot having only frequently used services enabled on boot.

Hopefully we will find something on clean boot or selective boot. The codec had fixed my computers audio, and orange lights on the F8 key and right upper corner mute key after a clean install and installation of windows 10 version 1703. Unfortunately the codec did not install on your computer and you reported that you did not see any other codecs offered. Also if I place my computer in clean boot or selective boot by un-checking only HP items I can make the orange lights reappear.

If the clean boot fails to alter the problems the only other thing that comes to mind is reinstalling multiple HP drivers to see if there is any impact. So its worth a shot to see if reinstalling drivers has any impact on the audio and orange light. This would include the bios and any/all of the listed drivers for the windows version you had when you first used the computer. For example if you had windows 7 and had no audio or orange light problem download and install the windows 7 drivers. Once you have completed installing all drivers reboot again and see if there is any change in the audio or orange light. If not then see if there were any alternative drivers for a later windows operating system, either 8, 8.1 or 10 and then update these drivers.

    Open device manager and expand:
    Audio inputs and outputs
    Sound, video, and game controllers
Right click on each row and uninstall the drivers.

Open the HP web site > software and drivers: HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HP® Customer Support

Enter your product or serial number. View drivers for your initially installed operating system and install the drivers. View revision history and see if there are newer drivers. Check the audio and the orange light. If there is no change with the original driver then update to the latest driver. Then check the audio and the orange light again. If the re-installation of these drivers does not fix the audio and orange light problem continue down the list reinstalling the remaining HP drivers. You will end up having all new drivers. Then reboot and check the impact on the audio and the orange light.

In summary, this is trial and error to see if running the three windows troubleshooters, clean boot, selective boot, reinstalling the drivers that first came with the computer and upgrading drivers has any impact on the audio and the orange lights.

  4. Volume Mute Light won´t change color

Disaster! Now the computer boots up to a background picture with date and time & two small Icons (no network and battery)in the lower rh corner. Clicking enter slightly dims the screen and adds a new small Icon lrh. Doing nothing returns the screen back to the brighter date/time and two icon screen after a half minute or so. WTF!!! Also, even though the mute buttons turns blue/green for a part of the boot-up time, at boot end we are back to orange so no change there. I´m writing this on a non-reliable backup laptop so please help!!!! UPDATE: After waiting several hours I tried again and pressed enter and was able to boot up but Norton says my security protection is not functioning (so I don´t dare go online), so please help me to restore to usual functioning. I just noticed that the tiny speaker Icon, lower right-hand side shows no sound function. Clicking on it opens the trouble finder but no problem can be identified and no solution is offered for the problem. New Update: opened system config and rechecked as on all the boxes that were previously unchecked per your suggestion and the sound mute button functions properly, albeit without the proper color function (as before) and Norton says that security is functioning normally so it seems that things are back to normal but I don´t know how to check to see if this is the case. Waiting for a reply before doing anything else.

Which steps did you perform? Was this from a clean boot?
Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste this command: shutdown /r /o /f /t 00
It will boot to the recovery options or windows advanced troubleshooting menu.
Click troubleshooting and click reset this computer. You will be saving files. Applications and programs will be removed. Windows will be reinstalled.
    Enter your windows logon password.
You will see getting things ready with rotating dots.
    Click resetting this PC.
It will then display the HP logo with resetting this PC with rotating dots and a percentage.

  6. Ouch! All this for one line of missplaced code? I don´t have the skills to do all you suggest. I also discovered a problem with the HTMI Connection (via the DisplayPort and and DP/HTMI adapter). Video is fine on the TV but audio is only on the 6440. When I rh click on the speaker logo and open the box showing the playback devices I see a speaker (green checked) icon, a headphones ("not connected" but green checked when the headphones are plugged in) icon and two (!) TV Icons ( 2-Hi Def Audio device Digital sound (HTMI)), neither one says/shows "connected", even when the HTMI Cable, connected to the TV is plugged into the 6440. When I click on either one I open a box (properties?-translating from the Swedish "egenskaper") that says "activate" (or not) at the bottom but nothing happens when I click "ok". As I see it, when the HTMI cable is plugged in, it should be activated and the speakers muted, just as the headphones are/do when they are plugged in, right? Both say that the device is working properly. My old (I`m 72) head is going nuts trying to figure this out.

Somehow we have to rule in / rule out problems.

    Let's perform the following steps:

    1) Back up all of your files
    2) Use Macrium to create a back up image:
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free
    3) create a restore point
    4) create a bootable windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10
    5) perform a in place upgrade repair:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

At this point you will have installed a fresh operating system and kept your files and applications.

    6) run the HP bios UEFI diagnostics in loop until failure (run overnight) to rule out any hardware problems.

After the in place upgrade and the UEFI tests report into the thread what is happening with the audio and lights into the thread.

Macrium is used frequently in this forum. There are experts in using it to recover drives. It's unclear as to why you are struggling to use it. I had not used it and just tried it for the first time and it went smoothly. Maybe these images might help?
