Windows 10: VPN Choice & is it needed

I recently got an offer from Lastpass to try ExpressVPN free for a month, so I signed up. I researched it & at least some websites recommend it as a top VPN. I was impressed with their support because it took me an hour to set up a dialer on my WinXP machine.

1. My first question:
Is it really needed? Supposedly, I can pretend that I'm anywhere in the world & it hides (or changes my IP address). So my question really has to do with safety. Does it make it more difficult for someone to hack my computer if I'm using a VPN? [By the way, I noticed that I'm not allowed to logon to this site while using a VPN *chuckle]

2. Are there any advantages to using a VPN? Since I can use it on unlimited devices (but only 5 at a time), I could also protect my iPhone & both my wife & daughter's iPhones & computers. Is it really worth it; i.e. what are the legitimate uses for it?

Apologize if this is such a basic question, but it's something I've never thought about before.
