  1. VPN makes Gmail and other sites inaccessible

I'm in a hotel with an unsecured wireless connection. Microsoft Defender asks me if I want to turn the VPN on. Sure. As soon as I do, I cannot get into Gmail. I have seen this before with other sites and so have avoided it. So what good does it do me to have a VPN if I cannot access Gmail? Turning it on and off is not an option as I have Gmail open all day long. Just for one. If there is some secret to getting this to work I am all ears.

    :)
