Windows 10: w10 beta failed

Hi,
I downloaded w10 (Build 10130 ??)doubled clicked "...Windows10_InsiderPreview_x64_EN-GB_10130...." & updated my w8.1 spare HD to w10. Worked OK & liked it that afternoon but, next morning would not boot up so after 2-3 hrs I use my flash stick & got w8.1 back.

I chose to install it free in July, hope they remind me when is ready, but will it fail again...?

I s that a usual thing with the BETA version?

No that is not the usual thing. I have been running 10 beta's since Oct. last. Done many installs with great success. Sorry to hear that you have had trouble with it. *Biggrin

 

Your PC specs may not be up to the Standards that Windows 10 has. Your video card in particular.

 

Nick, you might want to go here and download the ISO. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...eview-download If you're not already an Insider, if it were me, I'd sign up for it.

Once you've downloaded the ISO, you will need to get it ready for installation. Got an 8 GB flash/thumb drive laying around? Use that and the instructions found here https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html

Hint: Rufus is the easiest one. *Smile

At any rate, quite a few of us have found that a clean install of Windows 10 cures many ills . . .

This Insider & Rufuus I donot get.

Then the ISO, you will need to get it ready for installation, HOW? (burnit to my 8gb scandisk stick?)

For win 8.1 I downloaded this "Win8.1 mediacreationtool" & it prepaired a 8gb stick & worked OK.

This is what I downloaded for the w10 Beta," Windows10_InsiderPreview_x64_EN-GB_10130"

I do pray my specs are good as BETA worked fine with no errors a whole afternoon.

Your specs are good, Nick. And you have the ISO necessary to create the bootable flash drive. Now follow the instructions below, skipping the part about downloading Windows 10, which you already have. Be sure to disable Secure Boot and reenable it when you're finished! The following instructions are for UEFI BIOS.

How to Create a Bootable UEFI USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

UEFI Requirements:

• 64-bit Windows 10 Technical Preview ISO file. 32-bit is not supported.
• At least an 8GB USB flash drive depending on how large the ISO file is.
• To boot from an external UEFI USB flash drive, be sure to temporarily disable Secure Boot in your UEFI firmware settings until the Windows installation is finished.
• Once installation of Windows 10 is complete, re-enable Secure Boot.

• If you have not already done so, download the Windows 10 Technical Preview ISO file.
• Download the latest version of Rufus from: Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way, and save its .exe file to your desktop.

Connect a USB flash drive to the computer.

• Run the Rufus .exe file, and click/tap on Yes if prompted by UAC.
• Set up Rufus using the settings below and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below)

• Under Device, select the USB flash drive you want to format and use.
• Under Format Options, check Create a bootable disk using, click/tap on the browse icon to navigate to and select your 64-bit Windows 10 Technical Preview ISO file.
• Under Partition scheme and target system type, select GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer.
• Under File system, select FAT32.
• Under Cluster size, select the (Default) (ex: 4096 bytes) it has listed.
• Under Format Options, check Quick format.
• Under Format Options, check Create extended label and icon files.
• Under New volume label, you can enter any name you like for the USB flash drive, or leave the default name.

Click/tap on Start. About and Start will dim.

You will receive a warning that all data will be erased from the USB Flash Drive. Click/tap OK.

• Rufus will now start creating the bootable UEFI USB Flash Drive.

10. Once the ISO is written to the USB Drive and Rufus is finished, About and Start, which have been dimmed out will once again be in sharp contrast, the same as Log and Cancel. This is your clue that Rufus has completed his task.

Thanx again & forgive my ignorance but, if I could create media installing flash sticks for w8, w8.1 & w10 without all the info above why are these info necessary? I simply doubleclicked " Windows10_InsiderPreview_x64_EN-GB_10130" & created the install media on my flash stick which I used to update w8.1 to w10.

BTW is this " Windows10_InsiderPreview_x64_EN-GB_10130" you are calling ISO?

 

That info above was to help you make a bootable USB stick. That's what you use to do a clean install of an OS. Clean install sometimes is better than a upgrade and solves some problems with performance *Biggrin

 

Yes, that's the ISO that you will use with the instructions.

Once you've created the bootable USB stick/flash drive, you use it like you would use a DVD to install Windows 10.

When I do that will all the other 5 partitions be deleted?

The ones I mentioned above they booted the PC (weren't those sticks bootable?) & deleted contents of C:\ leaving the other 5 partitions intact , what sort of install would you call that? Just trying to learn.

 

I don't agree. All that Windows 10 needs is a DX9.0c/WDDM 1.0 compliant video card, and that one is, and the rest of the specs are more than enough. Just my humble understanding though...

I dowlnoaded "WindowsTechnicalPreview-x64-EN-GB" & "RUFUS-2.2" & waiting for the w10 full issue end of July to create the w10 USB.

When I do this clean install will I loose my 5 Logical partitions?

Please explain this:- "Secure Boot in your UEFI firmware" I do not have it, on start up I go to BIOS.

 

First off, I note that your computer is self-built, which means we don't have anything to go on as to what is and isn't included in your system.

1. Please give us the name and version of your BIOS.

For instance, one of my laptops has Phoenix BIOS. Others have AMI BIOS. Both of these are legacy BIOS and not UEFI.

My newer laptop has only F.34 for the BIOS Version. I know this computer is UEFI. Also, this desktop has UEFI BIOS. Neither have a named BIOS version.

2. Windows 10 installs only on the partition you tell it to install on. Just be sure you point to the right partition! Although some have said Windows 10 took out other partitions, I haven't had this happen to me. I do disconnect any external hard drives I'm not willing to lose, just in case a "user error" occurs (I choose the wrong partition to install on). *Smile

Once we know exactly which BIOS you have, then we can advise accordingly. At this point, I strongely suspect that I've been "instructing" you on UEFI BIOS but you have Legacy BIOS! Shame on me if that's the case! *Redface
