    W10 Fail

I was hoping for a "reduction" with the bells and whistles when I installed W10 yesterday. It saddens me that Microsoft did not listen to people about the traditional Start Menu--or at least, give the PC user the ability to change the Start Menu to look and behave exactly like Windows XP, Vista and 7. Not all three but carry on the fundamentals.

Change can be good but Microsoft continues to fail when looking at the OS for Desktop and Laptop computers. The analogy is so obvious too. People rely on their cars everyday to go from A to B and the configuration of the driving and shifting have been the same for nearly a century. Windows Desktop and Laptop users rely on the PC everyday for work, entertainment, research and discovery. The Start Menu is analogous to the driving mechanism of a car. Add a few features to the dashboard, sure, but don't reconfigure the fundamentals of how to drive the car.

I am guessing that 75% of Windows 7 users around the world will convert back to W7 (PC users). When it's time for Vista users to buy a new machine, I am speculating they will take the advice of people who experienced W8 and W10 and will shop online for Windows 7.

Microsoft needs to stop this madness. Unbelievable...

    :)

W7 fail after W10 upgrade attempt fail.

    Thank you

I already tried that. The Media Creation Tool gives the option to upgrade the computer, or download & save the ISO file for another computer. I tried both options, and early on got the blue screen with error message shown in my last post....

Does knowing the error code shown help any????

    Thank You!

Things evolve, change, and many users have to live with it. Windows 8 was, IMO, too a radical change that could be solved by installing a 3rd party menu. With computers, with TVs, and even with cars, following the car analogy, there are different gearing systems different to the classic H system (e.g automatic), and more speeds (6), instruments aren't always consistyently positioned, with the reverse gear positioned different, and with electric/hybrid cars things may further change

Personally I like Windows 10, and its menu, and didn't have a hard time to become used to, and I have used computers since Windows 98.
And you can use classic shell to get a XP/7-like start menu.

Your comment shows you are not a professional. You do not need to be concerned with other people's computer experiences. In my line of work as a freelance remote support tech-head, I do need to be concerned about my client's Windows experience.

Glad you like W10. I am sure it's fun to fiddle. *Wink

What are those Bells and whistles you are referring to ? Windows 7 has Aero and Gadgets to name at least two, which are missing from 10. People using 8/8.1 and 10 were crying for games included in 7. A lot of others were also complaining about lack of those bells and whistles from W7 and that W10 is to bare for their taste especially comparing to W7.

    Read the edit
And yes, even when isn't my job, I occasionaly asist people with computers, including my father, who I need to convince to evbolve and forget oldies, because the newer is in many cases (not always obviously) better, even when you are used to the old. *Smile
And do you think MS is not concerned about its client's Windows experience

Obviously MS(nor any company) cannot keep 100% of its clients happy, nor they cannot add any feature everybody throws randomly to get a huge mess of an OS with increased maintenance costs and more customer support calls.
Other people may complain it's too similar to 7, others may miss Aero, others want Aero burned with fire, others like the newer icons, others hate them, other want win98 theme, others want IE6 (yes), others want all the XP and 7 included games, blahblah

When XP came out, people wanted win98 back, they hated XP theme, it was slow, crappy, useless, compatibility issues, now "everybody" wants XP again lolololol

And as said, you or your clients can use classic shell to get the XP/7 start menu, what's bad about that?

My own experience with Windows 8.x and Windows 10 (and to some extent Vista) is that most end users believe whatever you, the "expert" tells them about computers and OS's. If you tell them how crappy something is, that is what they will believe. If you tell them how wonderful something is, they will believe that too.

It's only the stubborn, change-resistant techie crowd that seems to have real problems with these new OS's (and this is nothing new, going back to even XP, all the "techs" were complaining about it being a "fisher price OS", and complaining about the start menu. Fast forward 10 years and those exact same people were complaining about Windows 8's start screen and talking about how wonderful XP was and how they wanted the XP menu on 8. Fast forward another few years, and Windows 10 comes out, and many (but not all) of those same people are complaining about how they want the Windows 8 start screen back.

It never fails, what's new sucks, what's old is the best whatever ever... until the next new thing when that sucks and the thing that sucked before is now the best whatever ever.

  10. Been using Windows since 3.5 NT and so far over the years I have only been impressed with Windows 98SE and Windows 7 Ultimate as for being extremely stable. Can't speak to much on Windows 10 as it's only been installed for a day, but I can say that I feel like some settings are lacking... such as the full Aero and no way to color window borders and title bars. Also I feel like I have to go digging around a lot for settings in 10, where I felt it was a lot easier maneuvering around in Windows 7. Again I know it's new and has to grow on me, but even when I first starting using 7... was a lot easier finding what I was looking for.

  11. I moved away from the Start Menu a long time ago. Now I simply hit the "Win" key and type what I want to open. There is no need for to access that start menu, other than to right click on it from time to time.
