  1. W10 Laptop - 3.5mm and USB-C Earbuds use different mics for Input - Why and How do I Switch?

I have a Lenovo gaming laptop with both a 3.5mm jack that supports both mic and audio, and a USB-C port. I also have 2 pairs of Samsung AKG wired earbuds, one is 3.5mm and one is USB-C. When I use the 3.5mm buds, my PC uses the built in mic on the buds. When I use the USB-C buds, my PC uses the built in laptop mics on my display. They both change to the default input setting once plugged in.

My question is, why is one pair using the Laptop mic and the other using the Earbud mic? I can't find a setting to change the input, the only thing that always shows is Realtek Built In Audio. I want to use the 3.5mm earbuds but with my laptops mics, as they are way better quality than the cheap earbud one built into the cord.

Does this have something to do with 3.5mm vs USB-C? I've tried every setting but can't switch between my PC and wired earbud mics.

    Laptop won't detect built-in mic on headsets/earbuds

I'm running Windows 10 home on a Lenovo Ideapad laptop, and it doesn't detect the mic on any of my headsets/earbuds. I can hear playback fine on my headsets/earbuds, but it can't speak through them, since it insists on using the laptop's internal mic. This results in my typing/mouse clicks all being captured on audio.

    • In sound properties recording tab, I just see "microphone (Realtek high def audio)" and "stereo mix (Realtek high def audio)"
    • In sound properties playback tab, I just see "speakers (Realtek high def audio)", yet I hear audio fine on my headsets/earbuds?
    • In device manager, it doesn't detect a headset either, displays the same list as the recording tab
So do all 3 of my headsets/earbuds have some kind of "plug and play but stays invisible to the OS" feature? One of them is the default Apple earbuds, I'm 100% sure there's a mic on there and these are brand new, so they aren't broken. Are these not supposed to appear as a "headset" device with the headset icon in sound properties?

  3. Using the Built-In Mic Instead of Earbud Mic

    Hi all,

I've had this problem for a while now where no matter what kind of earbuds I'm wearing, the default recording device is always the built-in microphone on my laptop.

I've opened up recording settings and I don't see a specific device listed as the in-line mic built into my earbuds, but when I use these earbuds on my phone I am able to use the microphone seamlessly.

For further information, the default recording device on my computer is listed as Realtek High Definition Audio, and I've done several tests to confirm that it is indeed the mic that is built into my Asus laptop.

    Much thanks and cheers.
