Windows 10: W10 on VBox

Windows 10 bootrec /fixboot access is denied

If you are using Vbox to start up a Disk2VHD version, you must actívate at vbox console /system/base the option "enable EFI" otherwise your BOOTREC tools will not work out

Will reinstalling Windows 10 as new VM need a new activation?

Hi, I recently upgraded from Windows 7 on VBox to Wiindows 10 on VBox successfully. But now I want to reinstall WIndows 10 as a new VM on the same physical machine as the current VM has a .hdd format. I want to replace that with VDI format as that is supported
better on VBox.

Will I need to reactivate the Windows 10? If yes, how can I go about it?

Nothing as of yet...

I can get it to install using it in compatibility mode as Windows XP SP3 but it doesn't actually help with anything.
Been looking through the VirtualBox community and seen nothing there either.

Hang on, there may be a work around but I'm not in a position to test just yet..

This link is aimed at Windows 8 however seen a post in the VirtualBox community saying it worked for them on 10?

FYI... VMWare Tools install fine on W10 running in VMWare Player. You might want to hold off on VB until they update the Guest Additions to work with W10.

 

Jamie,did some testing,based on the "solutions" given over at VBox forums,forcing guest additions to install,didnt make it.
And while I gave hyper-v a chance,i actually "crippled" all my 64bit virtual machines,something like,your virtual processor does not support 64bit OS and stuff like that.Disabled hyper-v,got everything back,installing 10 again.
Hey strollin,sure will give VMWare a try,if VBox's dev's,get late releasing an updated version or GA of current version.But to be fair,its an only two days,not finalized,new OS,VBox has to be excused!

 

Cheers for doing the testing, sorry it didn't work.
I have given VM Player a go and it's doing a very good job so will stick with this for now.

 

Strolin,got to give you some credit,about VMware!
Had an account at VMware(needed a converter maybe two years ago),got version 6.0.3 for free.
Installed its tools right after first boot to to a vm,full screen right away,way to play with an OS!

 

At least it's easy enough to share a network folder (it is from a Win 8.1 Pro host, anyway) so I'm not really missing the Shared Folders feature of Guest Additions.

 

I installed W10 in VBox and had no problems with installing VBox or
the OS on it. But, what a disappointment in the viewing experience.

I had a peek at W7 when it was in Beta. I had it on a VMWare and
Everything worked flawlessly. That what a V machine should look
like.

I finally dual booted with 7 and I just can't say enough on how good
this looks compared to a Vmachine.

The problem with VBox is that the Guest Additions aren't compatible with W10 and can't be installed. The VBox team will probably release updated Guest Additions that do support W10 soon.

That's fine -- BUT if you have say a spare machine or want to try W10 after taking a backup image of your current system and then try a NATIVE W10 system you'll run into horrendous Networking problems after you install VMWARE and then ANY virtual Machine.

VMWARE works fine installing a GUEST W10 system - but a HOST W10 system running VMware seems to cause problems whether you choose NAT or Bridged whatever the GUEST OS is. Other OS'es as HOST seem to work OK running VMWARE Guests.

(Note HOST is an x-64 system - I don't bother with 32 bit HOSTS any more).

The latest version of VB and the guest additions (4.3.18) work well with W10. Ok, performance could be better but at least it works flawlessly, even in full screen mode.

 

Manually searching for update,returned "already running latest version" and that was 4.3.16!Downloading now .18,giving VB another shot...

Edit:Confirming VB 4.3.18 and its GA work excellent,good job Oracle,thanks for the input altae!
