W10 Sharing on LAN -- Need to REFRESH Network to access shares

    Hi there

Anybody got a solution to this

I have a LAN with various computers of different OS'es sharing HDD's. If I just leave them idling (i.e nothing running - no sleep / Hibernate / HDD disconnects etc) I find if I try and connect to a SHARE FROM or TO a W10 machine that hasn't been used say for 20 - 30 mins it initially comes up Can't access machine\device. I then list NETWORK in File explorer and after the display right mouse click and choose REFRESH.

    Hey Bingo all connects again.

A SERVER should be able to idle all day and all night until it's needed !!!!

It's VERY annoying though - I'm testing a Media server on W10 -- I don't want to have to keep going up to the computer from my remote TV and refreshing the network because the DNLA server has dropped out from the Network the next time I want to watch a movie.

Doesn't happen on XP / W7 / W8/8.1 or any Linux box I have. Only happens with connections TO and FROM the W10 machine(s) - doesn't make any difference either if the W10 machines are REAL or VM's.

I'd accept even a script as a workaround that could run every 10 mins say to automate the refresh -- but it's really annoying if you are away from your computers and have to keep coming back to refresh the Network. (At least I'm getting plenty of exercise running up and down stairs.

I don't want to mess about with remote commands using a Mobile phone though -- i'm testing for some people who wouldn't have a clue how to do that - they just want to switch on and the Box works !!!.

    Cheers

  2. Windows 10: Enter Network Credentials Username and Password for a computer that already has "no password required sharing is enabled"

I have a similar problem. Old PC is Dell Lap with Windows 7. New PC MS Surface with Windows 10. W7 is not allowed access to W10.

Popup asks for user and password. No combination of user and pass on W10 work. Eureka! It wants the user and pass from W7. Not intuitive!

Problem is still present. Now get "Network Error" "do not have permission...".

I setup a new account on W7 with the same user and pass as W10. Tried it all again. Still get same "Network Error"...

I tried accessing through "User Groups" and "File Explorer". I get the same results.

    Notes:

W10 resets User Group sharing to "Not Shared" every time it is rebooted.

Advance sharing, "All Networks" is set to "Turn off password protected sharing".

    Domain vs Homegroup

    fwiw;

Microsoft has said they will depreciate 'Home Group' probably on the next build, I think is what I've read. Pushing sharing to the clouds ...with OneDrive. Which really is, pretty simple for sharing.

If you are sharing a folder with others on your LAN - Share the folder, access it from others with a network share. Open explorer, right click This PC, choose 'add a network location; \\computerName\folderOrShareName

W10 Sharing on LAN -- Need to REFRESH Network to access shares

    Hi Jimbo

You've probably checked this but... If you open Device Manager and open the properties for the Ethernet Connection. Click on the Power Management tab, have you switched off both 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' and 'Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer'?

(I have a Windows 10 PC with My Movies installed, a collection of 32 TB of movies on various NAS devices and a Win 7 HTPC running Media Centre and mine all work great, so it must be a setting somewhere. *Smile)

    Hi there

WINNER --thanks --I thought I'd turned off everything that switched off / quiesced the computer -- note also set the Wireless adapter on a laptop too.

Needed re-boot of the entire network to get this propagated around all machines -- might not have been totally necessary but it's all working fine now.

This sort of stuff really should be made clear to people especially as Home networking is really totally mainstream now.

    anyway +1 for you.

    Cheers

I have noticed this same thing and was just about to make a post about it. I've already disabled the power management settings and even updated my Ethernet drivers and the same issue still occurs. I am NOT running my machines in a homegroup, just a simple network. I guess I have some more digging to do.

W10 Sharing on LAN -- Need to REFRESH Network to access shares

    Hi there

Try Powering OFF COMPLETELY all the machines in the LAN for 30 mins before re-booting. Reset your Router, flush the DNS stuff and also disable any USB / other power settings that "switch off" or Quiesce after a period. Disable HIBERNATE and SLEEP and turn off any settings that disable HDD's after a period.

These are in Power settings (advanced) but there are others all over the place --it's a real DOG's DINNER. !!!

    Cheers

I think I solved it. I posted this in another similar thread as well but here is what I've done and so far all is working like it should.

    • Updated my Ethernet card drivers
    • Made sure the power management for my Ethernet was disabled as far as turning it off to save power
    • Enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP under the IPv4 settings
    • Made sure the following Services were running. (A few of mine were not so I started them and set them to Auto start)
    • DHCP Client
    • HomeGroup Listener
    • HomeGroup Provider
    • Link-layer Topology Discovery Mapper
    • Network Connections
    • Network List Service
    • Network Location Awareness
    • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper

    Hi Hattrick21

Did you change the power setting in Device Manager, as per my #2 post? (My set-up is also using Workgroups and I can leave mine running for days, without this issue - sorry this didn't help! *Smile )

Yeah UKMedia I have verified that setting is off among many other things. I thought I had it fixed as my shared folder list kept coming up but as soon as I tried to open one of them, the issue popped up again saying it couldn't connect to the network resource. A refresh or 2 and then I could access the shares.

I'm trying to connect to a Windows 7 Pro machine. When I ran Win 7 Pro on my now Win 10 machine, I never had the issue.

I'm about to do a clean install of Windows 10 and basically start over as I've been putting it off and now is as good of a time as any. I thought about trying the repair option but I have alot of old stuff that I don't need so I'm just going to start from a clean state and install the things I need.

I had problems with this and changed some of the security settings on both the Win7 and Win10 machines but mine was no access rather than intermittent.

    My All Networks Settings are:

    - Turn off public sharing
    - Use 128-bit
    - Turn off password protected sharing

I'm logging in on my Win10 pc with a Microsoft account and a local account on my Win7 PC. I therefore needed to store the login details of each PC on the other PC - prompted to enter when trying to access. I also created my Workgroup as a Work type and not home.

    Is this your setup?
