Windows 10: W10: Strange DirectX 12 Freeze Bug; Any Possible Fix?

So over the last long while, I've noticed something erratic about DirectX 12. I've noticed that after an extended period of time using the PC, especially after waking it up after putting it to sleep, DirectX 12 can just... die. As in no longer work. If you try to play any game that uses it, it'll just instantly freeze.


The only cure is to restart the PC, but naturally, this is something I want to fix for the long-term, as I can't just keep restarting the PC every single time I want to play a game, as I do use the PC as a workstation as well and usually put it to sleep to preserve my workspace. An alternative is to play games in DX11, but not every game supports/allows that, so that's not really a solution.


I tried searching around for solutions, but to no avail. Not surprised, since this seems to be a unique issue. There doesn't seem to be any way to reinstall DX12 since it's built into W10, which means my only solution is to keep updating my GPU drivers in hopes that it does something, which I kind of doubt.


Does anyone have any ideas for this? Or am I basically forced to restart every time? Is there some way to "force restart" DX12 manually without restarting the PC i.e. is there some DX12 service I can turn off/on, or a BAT file I can run? Thanks!

Step 1:

I suggest you to check the DirectX Version installed on your system.

Follow the below steps to check the DirectX Version:

• Press Windows key + R from the Desktop.
• Type dxdiag and hit Enter.
• Check the DirectX Version.

Step 2:

I suggest you to update the Graphic driver from the Device Manager and check if it works.

Follow the below steps:

• Press Windows + R on the Keyboard.
• Type in devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.
• Select Graphic driver from the list.
• Right click on the Graphic driver and click on Update driver Software.

If the issue persists then install the latest graphic driver from the manufacturer and check if it helps.

Is it possible to install DirectX 12 on WIndows 10 64-bit machine

Windows 10 comes with DirectX 12, however, its functionality always depends on the hardware, That is, the Graphics driver must be able to support DirectX 12.

I suggest you to run the DirectX end-user Runtime installer and check if it helps from the link below.

Coming to downgrading DirectX, DirectX upgrades are a one way streets wherein you can't downgrade once installed. One way to fix the BSOD (or dxgmms2 issues) is to update the graphics drivers to support DirectX 12.
