Windows 10: W10 taskbar search not working/blank on one useraccount, searchproces hiCPU, no Cortana on...

Search from taskbar results in blank window, not responding to typing. Search from explorer windows works normally.

Taskmanager shows hi processor usage by search process for about 1 hour (at logon and after each attempt to do taskbar search)

The above is for one user account; a newly made user account does not show these problems


What I did check/try:

1. Checked controlpanel indexing options, rebuild index, problem remains

2. Search problem solver does not see problems

3. settings of windows search service are OK

4. tried DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth + sfc/scannow, nothing found, problem remains

5. tried Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}, problem remains

6. have seen recommendation to reset Cortana, but cannot do this: no Cortana on my PC (Cortana not available in my country/language)


So: I have of course a simple workaround (changing to a new user account), but this problem has showed up on several PC's around here, so I would really appreciate to learn what might be causing this problem ---Thanks!

Cortana Taskbar Search Not Working


Cortana taskbar search shows up but when you click on it, you cannot enter text. Also even though you can see the Cortana control panel listing when searching in Settings when you click on it it does not open. I checked and the Cortana files are in the System Apps folder. The Cortana process does not show up in Task Manager processes. It looks like some built in Win 10 Microsoft apps are disabledoing in Apps and Settings. See attached pics. Any tips would help fix this Cortana taskbar search issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

To show the Search bar on your taskbar, kindly follow the steps below:

• Right click on a blank area of the taskbar.
• Select the Cortana submenu and select the option Show Cortana icon.

You can also always press the Windows+S keys to open Search.
