W10 Update gives out 0x80070002 after 0x800f0816 & keeps uninstalling

    Hi everybody out there,

having unsuccessfully tried to get help on German boards,
I have registered here. Maybe someone can help me.

I upgraded to Win10 in August and everything went fine until October 17, where my PC's event log states that
KB 3097617 failed to install due to 0x800f0816
Five days later the error code changed to 0x80070002

WIndows messages told me that updates could not be installed (as did and DOES the update procedure itself every time I tell my PC to "Reboot").

A manual install from the MS Website of the said Update failed on October 24th as well.

KB 3105216 installed successfully on October the 25th.

Then the cumulative Upgrade KB 3105210 started installing (but remained unsuccessful) on October 31st. It's basically the same problem just switched to the new update as far as I get it.

Event log first gave out error 0x800f0816 again with this new package, the error code changing to 0x80070002 on November 8th.

Another manual install from the MS website failed on November 8th.

My computer runs fine but the issue keeps me troubled because Updates should work fine in my opinion.

So finally I decided (more or less in despair) to try the new Win10 (Reset State) option in the Win10 Settings / Recovery section.
The machine gave me a (quite long) list of programs I would have to reinstall from scrap after creating an image of C: (which I did on drive W). But THEN: It told me the Reset could not be executed and now I'm here.

    This is my PC:

I've just tried to upload my CBS.log here (Somebody said experts could get something out of it - I can't),
but it's size is 4.74MB (maybe due to the same error thing) so I can't upload it here your site has just told me.

I'm grateful for every little hint I can get.

    Thanks.

    :)

    Windows 10 update error codes

Windows keeps trying to update and I keep getting error codes 0x80070002 & 0x80070003. I cannot find the reasons for these errors or what is supposedly missing in my computer. I have a Dell PC & am on W10 Version 1607 OS Build 14393.0. Have done troubleshoot
    plus more.

    Windows 10 -update errors

Running Apple PC with Parallels. Recently updated from W7 to W10. Some updates need to be loaded but these keep crashing. error 0x80070002.

Apparently there is a Windows repair tool = but this is NOT available for W10 64 bit.

Running Re-image but this has frozen at 79%

    No one so far?

Hm, well here is today's part of the CBS.log which I cut out of the whole file.

    CBS 3.txt

Maybe someone can help me understand what's going wrong.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Gas,
thank you for the link. Unfortunately so far, things haven't changed.

As I thought it would react, TH2 won't install at the moment on my PC.

I'll keep you updated on my issue. Still happy about further suggestions.

    Hi Lefool,

I think you better upgrade it using the Media Creation Tool, and upgrade it keeping all your files and apps, it worked fine for me, here is a Brink link for doing it:

W10 Update gives out 0x80070002 after 0x800f0816 & keeps uninstalling

Well, thank you Gas, but so far it does not for me. All I get is a box from Win10 setup saying that it can't proceed and that I have to restart my computer to try again next time. Maybe I can upload the screenshot, let's see.

This is what I get when I try to run the new ISO from the CD...
    Frustrating.

Try not saving/writing ISO to a CD, there is the option to upgrade straight from the Media Creation Tool, am I understanding correctly, is what you did?
Did you also check if you have enough free space in your C drive?
    Let me know

    Hi Gas,

thanks for keeping up the conversation. The screenshot was made after I had burned a new ISO.
So maybe it's still going to work.
I'll try again to start the setup directly from the MS tool tonight.

My C Drive is a new SSD (102GB free from a total of 232GB) so memory space on the SSD should not be the problem.

I somehow am under the impression that something during the "activation" process in August must have gone wrong somehow. It took me days to get Win10 activated correctly, but then everything was fine for 2 months.

I'll keep you updated on this.

    Thanks so far,

Nope, the MS tool gives me the same box as above even if I start the tool directly from Desktop. *Sad

So I'm going to head for a clean new install. *Shock

Any hints from anybody what I should (not) do? *sarc

Here are my questions: I'll certainly make a complete copy of C onto an external hard drive before I start the procedure, but AFAIK my other hard disk drive (D; W) won't need to be "saved", or will it?
Will I need to "erase" the files on C before doing a re-install of Win10?
What about the activation code? Will Win10 "know" that it was already running on my system?
And: Would I use the MS tool for the re-install or are there any other preferable methods?

    Thanks for help from anyone.

    Best wishes,
