Windows 10: W7-W10 Pro x64 Upgrade error

I updated my drivers and bios on my Dell E6230, then tried the update. I get the following error.



Can I get some direction on what to look for? Thanks.

I tried w ISO W10, then W7 Ultimate upgrade key, the original W7 pro

error- invalid key

 

Did you uninstall any Anti-Virus software before hand ? How many attempts failed ?

I have tried several attempts before, and now once more with no virus protection. It starts with this screen:



It runs and restarts at about 25% and 75%, and I get the following.

I've tried with new media using a iso file on a USB drive. There is no DVD drive.
to do this I go to the boot screen and select EUFI boot (Note there is no sequence). The legacy boot doesn't work.







After putting in the cert number I get this.



I don't understand these instructions, but when I take out the USB and reboot, I get this error.

 

When you use a USB Flash drive you need to make that drive bootable first. Programs like Rufus can do this for you, if had a disc drive you would not need to do this. One reason for not recognizing USB Flash Drive. Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

By default your Laptop is set to Legacy Mode, assume it may have come this way when you bought it. Telling me Legacy boot does not work, show USB Flash maybe because not bootable, not sure what you meant there. I would myself use UEFI, but not positive of this Laptop since default was Legacy and if it was to begin with as i see tried to change it, shown here to.



Not sure what you meant about Cert number. If get it to recongnize using UEFI you will see UEFI next to a drive letter on boot with flash drive inserted.

Check through Dell as they do say this was tested to work for Windows 10. Think 4th screen shot may indicate using Custom install, meaning wiping the drive and clean installing, may have selected it. Also retrieve the manual to help you more as i showed a pic of a page here.

I used Rufus to make a W10 bootable. I used this to update an E6520 successfully. I used the same USB .iso for this. With the E6520, I had to use the EUFI boot, but it showed drives to chose the sequence from. This one shows nothing.

By the Cert number I mean the key from my original W7 Pro. Any thoughts on why it's not recognizing the USB onthis system where the other system recognized it?

 

What did you mean when you used it to update successfully , when again it did not succeed ? Then saying showed the drives to choose from, but this one showed nothing ? Sorry if i am bit confused, maybe the wording or i am not thinking straight myself.

You do not need your Windows 7 key to activate Windows 10 upgrade. Sure BIOS is not still in legacy mode ? By default it seems this is in Legacy. If using UEFI Firmware when boot from the USB Flash you would then or should have a chose of seeing UEFI USB in boot menu list with a drive letter after it. Think before you said had trouble with Legacy mode.

Did try Media Creation tool way and did not work, correct and also way through the update which was why you originally started this thread.

 

Do you hav an activated Windows 7/8/8.1 install now. If so, boot into your current os, insert the USB drive, open the usb and click setup. It will start from there. If it asks for a license key, skip it and continue. It will automatically activate itself.

Considering failed attempts from Windows 10 (GWX) app in notification area and the media creation tool.
Still feel this might be related to something on the system, driver or settings. Research has shown some of this.

Sorry for being unclear. I currently have an installed copy of W7. I want to upgrade to W10. I've upgraded the drivers and the BIOS to the latest version dell has for this model. I've used the W10 creation tool to download the .iso. I've used Rufus to put the creation tool onto the USB. I boot using Legacy mode in the BIOS, because the UEFI gives me an error when I boot in W7. I then plug in the USB and select startup on the USB. I get this screen.



It goes along and reboots at 24% and 75 % then comes back with an error telling me it had trouble completing and generates the following screen.



Then this is the error message before continuing to restore W7



Is there a way to do a factory reset? Maybe that would clear things up.

 

You wanted to try what Essenbe suggested by just copying ISO on USB Flash without making it bootable insert it in the drive, open it and select the setup.exe file. Chances from reading about these errors can be due to some incompatibility, low hard disk space, Anti-Virus (which was said to be removed) and or some other program, and is trying to migrate over and having trouble.

Do not think resetting this laptop from a factory reset may fix the issue unless it is due to something on system since then and not after then.

Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
Do a clean boot and try again.
If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both and attempt setup again.
If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi and proceed with the installation.
If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account
If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).



Clean boot will disable all non-microsoft processes eliminating possibility of running process interfering with the upgrade, never saw this recommendation done here to know how it works.
