1. Want to debug and learn how to debug Windows 10 BSOD on Dell Latitude

I recently did an inplace update of Windows 7 pro to Windows 10. This is a fairly new Dell laptop but after a number of months working fine, I started to get BSODs in Windows 7. My hope was that the Windows 10 upgrade would solve the BSOD issues, but they continue.

At this point, I realize I need help from some genius out there. I tried using the awesome instructions on this site to install WinDBG and analyze a mini-dump file from the laptop and here are the results below. If you can help me get back to a steady state with this laptop, I honest cannot even tell you how incredibly grateful I will be:

My WinDBG results so far are attached as a separate file, along with my TenForums.com zip file about my system. Even though tablet is in the laptop name, it's not a tablet.

Thank you so much for being the kind of people who help other people. So great.

:)

Here is a good article to get you started on debugging BSOD's:

Want to debug and learn how to debug Windows 10 BSOD on Dell Latitude

Hello and welcome to TenForums *Smile

I ran WinDBG and it revealed the following:

BugCheck 154, {ffffad010c31d000, ffff9b81410a9420, 2, 0}
Probably caused by : hardware_disk

UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION (154)
The store component caught an unexpected exception.
Arguments:
Arg1: ffffad010c31d000, Pointer to the store context or data manager
Arg2: ffff9b81410a9420, Exception information
Arg3: 0000000000000002, Reserved
Arg4: 0000000000000000, Reserved

This would suggest you should perform further diagnostics on your hard disk, use the DELL diagnostics tool to see if that reveals anything.

I noticed that your analysis had lots of errors due to the lack of symbols being downloaded. Make sure your reference to the symbol server is correct in the Symbol File path. I use:
Code: https://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
5. Thanks. This is my symbol path: srv*c:\SymCache*http//msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

I have not used that tool. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I have run CHKDSK, SFC and all the on-laptop Dell diagnostics tools in the brief scan mode. I'll try the long scan mode.

My understanding of WinDBG is that if I had had all the symbols working, then I would have gotten more debug info that I have in the file I shared. Is that correct? If so, and if my symbol path is correct, what would the next thing be to look at in troubleshoot my access to the needed symbols. Also, would it make sense for me to just upload the .dmp file and have somebody give me a fish (quick expert look) while I am learning to fish?

Thanks again for the help! Much appreciated.

6. I've had no luck in getting WinDBG to have all the needed symbols and the online Dell diagnostics didn't indicate any problem...and yet still a BSOD every other day on this Dell Latitude E7270.

I've attached two minidump files.

Could somebody who does have a working WinDBG with all the Windows 10 symbols process these two .dmp files for me and see if there are any specifics regarding the BSOD cause?

I would be very grateful.

7. These are my device drivers if that is helpful. Thanks in advance to anybody who will look at my minidump files with WinDBG and help me solve this BSOD. If there is a site where I can pay somebody to do this, let me know. Dell support is worthless, and I don't think I'll get much better from Microsoft.

Want to debug and learn how to debug Windows 10 BSOD on Dell Latitude

In the analysis of these minidumps I found one of the Intel Graphics drivers was picked out as having problems:

ffffbd81`cec266c8 fffff804`123af830Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\igdkmd64.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for igdkmd64.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for igdkmd64.sys
igdkmd64+0x2ef830

There is a newer driver available on the Intel website: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/pro...aphics-Drivers

9. Thanks, Phil. I have recently upgraded those drivers to the latest version, via this link:

Intel HD, 4200, 4400, 4600, 5000, 5100, 5200, 5300, 5500, 6000, 515, 520, 530, P530, Iris 540 Graphics Driver Driver Details | Dell US

That didn't stop BSODs from happening. Maybe it's memory or hard drive and that is making it look like driver crashes. I'm surprised it is so hard to isolate cause and effect on these things.

I've seen other people with similar model laptop saying hard drive firmware update solved issues for them. The disk drive is a LITEON L8H-256V2G-11 M. SCSI and the driver is 10.0.14393.0 dating back to 6/21/2006. I'm going to email Liteon and see if there is a new driver.

Thanks for the help and ideas.

12. After another BSOD today, no new minidump. I had to power down from the BSOD as it was stuck on 0%, while it tried to reboot.

After that, it took me a while to get back into the OS. Had to go into Safe Mode and execute "netsh int ip reset" from a Command prompt, which seems to fix an issue where Windows 10 doesn't recognize me as a real user and locks down the Start menu.

I ran chkdsk /r and got these results:

Code: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume label is OS. A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk. Please wait while your computer restarts.
I am at a loss. I think I just need to get on a new computer and send this one back to Dell for repair. It is under warranty, but I hate dealing with them. It's always double pain with Dell. We give you this defective computer and if that pain is not enough, now you have to deal with our support people. Ugh.

Please do not mark this as solved as nobody actually helped me to get WinDBG working and fix this issue. Unless you just like to close stuff out even if the issue was not solved -- if so, go ahead.

Not sure what your symbol problem is as I just downloaded your zip file, extracted the files then ran windbg against the single .dmp file it contained and it worked with no problems:

14. Yeah, hard to say. It could be that whatever root cause is, it's also not allowing the right symbols to get invoked. I suspect it's memory or hard drive -- something mechanical. So am going to get a new laptop up and running today and then send this off to Dell. Strangely, I had run Dell pre-boot diagnostics before and it came up clean, but yesterday I ran again and it did flag a hard drive error. I thought for sure it was software related because this Dell laptop is so new. The good news is I know how bad Dell is these days so I did buy the warranty. Thanks for all the help. Case closed, albeit not resolved, for now.
