Want to prevent OneDrive from backing up my PC or downloading photos to my phone

I recently was given a refurbished PC with Windows 10. I don't want OneDrive to store any of my files--and I want to change my settings so that this never happens.I also have a Samsung Galaxy A32 from which I download photos to my PC as soon as I take them. I don't leave photos on my phone. Yet for some reason the phone automatically backs up the photos to the cloud as well. How do I prevent both types of OneDrive backups from happening? Please, no responses trying to get me to change my mind. Thanks in advance.ajk1962f

  2. Photos are not syncing to OneDrive

    Hello pleonidas,

Thank you for your accurate response and for trying the steps.

This shows us that the auto-upload works normally, but only for photos that you take after switching the auto-upload on.

Of course, uploading manually 450 photos is completely unpractical so what I would suggest, is to sync your photos to your PC using the Windows Phone app.

Then of course, if you wish to upload them to Onedrive, you should be able to do that more easily from your PC. At least, your photos will be backed up.

    Kind regards,

    Onedrive cleanup

Don't use Onedrive and have never created an account for it, but I am concerned it may have sucked up a bunch of photos early on before I went in and disabled all that cloud related stuff (Onedrive, shared experience, yourphone). W10 docs say Onedrive is enabled by default, and at one point when I attached a phone the photos app seemed to indicate Onedrive had backed up every photo on the PC. I never wanted that.

If Onedrive was enabled by default, is it using the W10 user, login? Can I just use that on the website? Currently Onedrive will not launch on the PC so it does seem disabled. What steps do I take to check for stored cloud content and delete it?

OneDrive Placeholders are coming back, now called On-Demand Sync

"At Ignite 2016, Microsoft has just announced that it is bringing Placeholders back to OneDrive on Windows 10. Now, they are not called Placeholders anymore — Microsoft is renaming the feature to “On-Demand Sync” which makes a lot more sense than “Placeholders”.

The company demoed this feature at Microsoft Ignite today, and it works just like it used to previously. As you can see in the screenshot above, the files stored in OneDrive weighed in around 9GB, but the actual size on disk was only around 3MB which is really neat. Of course, this feature isn’t anything new as it was available back in the Windows 8 days. However, Microsoft removed the feature with Windows 10, and after lots of waiting, they are finally coming back.

In case you are not familiar with OneDrive Placeholders, it’s a pretty neat feature which lets you see all of your OneDrive files on your computer — but they are not actually downloaded on your PC. When you open them, OneDrive will download the files on-demand, saving your local space which is really useful, especially if you have a PC that doesn’t have a lot of storage.

While Microsoft didn’t announce when exactly On-Demand Sync will be available to OneDrive users, we suspect it will be available with Windows 10 Redstone 2 — which is expected to arrive early next year.
