Windows 10: We couldn't complete Updates undoing changes then Black Screen

I have a Dell XPS 8930. I allow my computer to do automatic Windows updates. My Computer has attempted to install Updates for Windows 10 Pro for several weeks at night inactive hours while I am asleep. When I get up in the morning I have a normal login screen then upon logging in the screen is black with a mouse cursor. If I attempt to do a Ctrl-Alt-Del I get a security warning. I have tried many of the "fixes' mentioned here and other forums. I have had to resort to the turn the computer on and then off before windows boot completes three times then restore from a Restore Point. I have pause updates for 35 days. Then last evening I had to restart my computer for another issue so updates attempted to install. It got to 100% and then Said "We Couldn't complete the Update. Undoing changes" After a few minutes I got the normal login screen and upon logging in I got the Black Screen and mouse cursor and the Security warning when attempting Ctrl-Alt-Del, Win+R, anything I attempt. I once again rolled back to an earlier restore point.


As I have said I have tried most everything suggested in this and other discussions for the Black Screen and Security warning but this is the first time I have witnessed the Couldn't complete Update"


This is getting quite frustrating does anyone have any suggestions.

I suggest you to run the Windows Update troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with Update. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Windows update.

Refer these steps:

  Press Windows key +X, select
  Control panel.
  
• 
  Change the view by option on the
  top right to Large icons.
  
• 
  Click on troubleshooting and click on the
  view all option on the left panel.
  
• 
  Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Windows 10: "We couldn't complete the updates, undoing changes"

I've got the same issue and following on @Arthur's suggestion, I had a look at my user SIDs in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and some of them belonged to users that no longer existed in the system (I had previously removed them).

I've removed the dummy entries (luckily there were only a couple) and the update worked.

PLEASE save yourself some trouble and backup the registry before trying that.
