  1. Webcam showing up as an audio device.

Title says it all. But, I should probably provide some more information.

I am trying to use a webcam with my desktop applications, Zoom, OBS, Discord, Facebook Messenger. Yesterday it was working fine, I had it connected to OBS and I was testing out my classroom scene, everything moving smoothly. Today when I turn my laptop on, the webcam was not showing up. It was in control panel, and device manager, they were showing it there as a camera. But OBS refused to see it as a video capture device, and Zoom only showed a gray screen. When I tried to get it to work on Discord, I was greeted with a notification that "a new audio device has been detected" after I plugged it in again.

A few more things to note, I am running a Surfacebook 2 on a SurfaceDock. The webcam is plugged into a USB hub attached to the Dock. I have also tried plugging it directly into the Dock, as well as into the Surfacebook 2 itself. This issue has remained throughout no matter how it is plugged in.

The only thing I can think of is that my USB microphone (some FiFine variant) and my webcam (Aukey brand) have some how mixed their signals. But I am even unsure of this, as the microphone is working just fine and removes itself from device manager when I unplug it, as it recognized by Zoom and OBS and my other desktop apps.

TLDR: webcam is recognized as a video device by control panel and device manager, but desktop apps only see it as an audio source.

As for why I am not using the webcam on the Surfacebook, it sits far from me on my desk and would create a weird angle for my coworkers and classmates to view me in. (sideways instead of head on)

Imaging Devices missing in Device Manager and Webcam doesn't working

    Hi,

Since you mentioned that the said driver is missing in Device Manager, what we suggest is for you to check in the Hidden Devices section on Device Manager. Kindly follow the steps below:

    • On the desktop, press Windows key + X and select
      Device Manager.
    • Click on View and select
      Show Hidden Devices.
    • Check for the webcam under Imaging Devices.
    • If the webcam is listed, then right-click on it and select
      Update Driver Software
    • Select Browse My Computer for Driver Software and follow the prompted steps.
Please post back with the result for further assistance

    Skype webcam sound won't work

Terminate Skype, then go to Control panel -> Sound and audio devices -> Audio -> un-check "Use only default devices", restart Skype and see if the webcam audio input is listed.

    Webcam had disappeared

    Hi,

The webcam may have stopped working due to hardware failure, or a loose cable that connects it to the device’s motherboard. We suggest that you try to show hidden devices in
Device Manager by following these steps:

    • Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
    • Click on the View tab and select Show hidden devices.

If you are seeing the webcam drivers, uninstall them. Then restart your device to check if Windows will be able to recognize the webcam and will install the drivers.

Let us know how it turns out.
