I have several websites pinned to my Start Menu for quick and easy access, but for some reason (presumably an update) they all now launch as apps with very limited tools to choose from. Sure it still provides the option to display it in Microsoft Edge, but that's what it should've done in the first place. Having to manually switch to the normal browser only makes the experience more frustrating than it needs to be. What makes it even worse is that the full version of Edge no longer has the "Pin to Start" button from the three dots submenu. Sure I can still pin it to the taskbar then pin to start from there, but having to replace all of my pinned sites this way consumes a lot of time and even then the new icons look hideous.

How am I supposed to work with icons this ugly?

It boggles my mind why anyone would think this was a good idea. When I use a web browser, I'm gonna need some of those extra buttons that these "apps" don't have. I wish I could just revert the icons I already have to automatically launching into the full version of Edge instead of this garbage. If this is possible, please tell me how.

  2. How to pin shortcut to start menu.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the description, I understand that you would like to know how to pin short cut to start menu.

I would suggest you to refer to the article given below if you are using Windows 7.

Pin a program to the Start menu

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Pin-a-program-to-the-Start-menu

And if you are using Windows 10 then I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below.

    Pin apps to Start

Pin the apps you use most often to the Start menu. Here's how:

    • Go to Start > All Apps.
    • Press and hold (or right-click) an app.
    • Select Pin to Start.

Hope this helps. Please let us know the results. We will be happy to assist you further.

  3. Pin a website to the Start menu and then change its URL

Pin a website to the Start Menu

    1. Open Internet Explorer desktop app.
    2. Go the website that you want to pin.
    3. Click the gear icon and choose "Add site to Apps."
    4. In the window that appears, click "Add."
    5. Open the Start Menu, go to All apps, find the pinned site, right click it, and choose, "Pin to Start."

Change the URL of the pinned website

Open PowerShell and run the following.

Notepad will open with the settings for the .website file. Change the URL field and save the file. You're done.

We can also do this with the command prompt.

    Notes

Instead of using the IE desktop app, we can use the new Edge browser, but it pins the site directly to the Start menu and stores the resultant .website file elsewhere.

Instead of using PowerShell, we can use the command prompt.

Once we have notepad open, we can also change tile's icon.

To change the tile's name, rename the .website file.

Websites pinned to my Start Menu now launch as apps. How do I undo this?

What can you pin to start menu?

So what exactly can be pinned to start menu in Win10?
    • Applications, obviously,
    • Folders,
    • Settings from modern Settings App,
    • Settings from Control Panel,
    • Websites, through Edge menu,
    • Websites, by creating "application view" in IE11,
    • OneNote notes and notebooks through modern app

Anything else? I'm thinking files, shortcuts, emails, contacts etc.

I've seen there were hacks to pin files in Win8.1, didn't try them yet. Is there any way to pin files without hacks? When I drag a file over start icon I get a "pin to start menu" tooltip, but can't actually do that.
