    Well, I threw in the towel . . . .

After sending 4 days of troubleshooting, making edits in the registry, and reading and posting at this wonderful site, I finally decided to install a fresh copy of Win10. I purchased this PC at MicroCenter back in Oct and it was preloaded with 10 Pro. I'm going to be very reluctant to update any drivers, and if I do, I'll create a restore point before driver install and then run sfc afterwards.

Come on folks, it shouldn't be this way. What a royal PITA.*Mad

    :)

    Threw in the towel

Well, as capable of a device as it was, I finally got a little fed up with my N900 and traded in for an N8 today. So far,...and I'm very early into it,...it seems to be quite a nice device. I was seriously twitching at possible getting the HTC Desire,
but Nokia is what I've been with over here in Kuwait (American contracted firefighter) since I bought an N73 in 2006. They just build so many features into their phones,...especially the high end phoned, you can't find in other devices. I'm a Mac guy, but
not an iPhone groupy. So...checking my phone info, it says I'm running PR. 1.0, software version 011.012, custom version 011.012.C04.01. Is this the latest iteration of the OS? I selected "Update Automatically" so I guess it'll take care of business when
needed. So far I'm pretty stoked. I love the fact that they went back to a logical Music Player like I had on my N95 8GB....you know,....able to make your own playlist easily, etc. Any tips are appreciated. So far so good.

    Well, I threw in the towel . . . .

windows usually creates restore points on driver installs itself *Smile were people here advising you to edit your registry? updating drivers , depending on what they are for , is usually a good idea but theres also an "if it aint broke dont try to fix it" policy you should employ with pc's *Wink

Yeah, unfortunately there are very mixed reports about the stability of Windows 10. You must have ended up with a bad prune - many other people report a trouble free life with Win 10. I myself decided to skip Win 10 and stay on Win 7.

The truth is a lot of Windows 10 problems are from outdated drivers but I would go with the above poster if its working fine don't change a thing.

What I found out is that the problem I was having prior to the rebuild (AutoRun not working with my CDROM) worked fine in Windows 10 until the Nov. Release was installed. This is not a driver issue. When I load a CD into the CDROM, I have to force a File Explorer refresh for the CD to be recognized, and then AutoRun will work. I'm wondering why the initial read of the CDROM is not recognized by the system.

Nevertheless, sfc and DISM run without error - this is a good thing.

  8. Well, I threw in the towel . . . .

I woke up to a black screen this morning, and had to force shut down my computer twice before it 'woke up'. Not impressed.

I was gonna do that too. But I couldn't stand the constant harping to do the upgrade. It's been about three months now and so far no problems. Not all that much different from 7. I want to do a clean install of 10 but I guess I'm just too lazy.

  11. So you were running the pre-installed version all this time? That's a minor miracle, as they usually contain outdated drivers and enough pre-installed software to make a high-end computer run like crap.

First rule of buying an OEM computer....perform a clean install with the latest drivers and only install software you want or need.

    Well, I threw in the towel . . . .

Yes, that's what I've had to do. Good advice.

Any idea why Windows doesn't read my CDROM drive without a forced scan?

Same here. Broke down on Jan 2 and switched. Bad move! I'm at the 50/50 point of going back to Windows 8.1. At least I had come to grips there with what would run and what would not. I have found only 1 or 2 useful things in Windows 10 and neither of them are deal breakers. This week, an older app (that worked fine from Jan 2 until this week and had worked fine in Compatibility mode in Windows 8.1) suddenly stopped working properly. It will open once but the processes do not close when I am done.

I wonder if I can go back to 8.1 then reconsider 10 in July?

If you have an external HDD, download and install Macrium Reflect from download.com (C|Net). Make your boot disk, so that you can boot form it using your specific drivers, and make a backup to the HDD. Always have a restore point, and if the internal HDD fails, you have that to go back to.
