Windows 10: Well, it certainly wasn't an easy decision to make, but...

Discus and support Well, it certainly wasn't an easy decision to make, but... in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; The start menu in 9926 was an interim start menu. The Menu in 10041 is a lot better in many ways. Sure, some people still don't seem to like it.... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by Wenda, Mar 21, 2015.

  1. Well, it certainly wasn't an easy decision to make, but...

    It's MS' own fault.
It's like no one at MS understands English (even the US version).

IMO, the W10 scrolling complaints don't relate to the Start Menu pane, but to the "All Apps" column.

The solution to this issue has not changed since the W8 previews.
Provide an easy to use setting; "Use W7 Start Menu system" or "Use W8 Start Screen system".

If you are offered a "horrible choice" or an "even more horrible choice", the best option is the "horrible choice".

It seems like MS couldn't (or wouldn't) fix the Control Panel issue in the W8 series.

There have been rumours that the RTM is only a few months away. *Eek

  2. MS is not going to fix what they feel is not "broken". I was actually feeling quite positive the way the UI was going until MS went and stuck us with this ridiculous "Modern" Start Menu! IF I wanted live tiles, I'd use the Start Screen. If I want the Start Menu, I want something NOT "Modern" but more like the old Win7 start menu.

The Stardock folks actually have what I feel is the right idea -- give folks a choice over what type of Start Menu they want. I have to believe that it's not rank stupidity that prevents MS from understanding this "choice" thing -- it has to be some other agenda at play.

MS is not going to fix what we think is broken, only what they think is broken. It's becoming apparent that the one-UI-for-all (phone) people are driving the UI decisions and that those of us who do NOT want a smartphone-like UI are, just as with Win8, going to lose out in the long run.

Boy, oh Boy, that darn Microsoft sure is run by a bunch of dumb a**es isn't it. They just don't get it. All of us really smart computer folks out here in the world of computers are trying to help them get their you know what together, and they just can't seem to understand that we know better then they do on how a computer OS should be built. Darn . . .*really. . .Standing by. . .*Smile

I did not like the old start menu and I do not like the new one either. This is the start menu I really like.

One thing that still works GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} for the ones that don't like the new setting menu and the castrated control panel.

  10. It's much easier to customise too.

The "All" column isn't any better than W10's "All Apps" column though.

I'd read somewhere that "God Mode" still works. *Party

    Absolutely, Jimbo! Absolutely!

My Realtek audio on the laptop went bonkers with 10041 and I had to go to HP to get the "single" driver I needed. I told HP I was using 8.1, downloaded (rather than download and install), and then installed the driver. It worked just fine.

As you point out, there are just too many hardware versions out here, both built-in onboard as well as plug-ins for Microsoft to be so arbitrary about downloading and installing new drivers. It's just plain crazy!

Do not! I say, Do Not arbitrarily install new hardware drivers on MY SYSTEM! I am the one who knows what's inside this computer!

I still cannot get IE or any browser to work properly in Windows 10. In fact, it's even worse now, I can usually only open a couple or three sites and then the browser stops working and I have to shut down and reboot to keep the Internet working. As a test, I booted to Windows 8.1 yesterday and kept it open all day. Well, never a glitch with Windows 8.1. Soooooooo, it's my opinion that it's Windows 10 Build 10041. Whatever the problem may be, it's a pain in the butt!

If I could get everything to work in the new All Settings, I wouldn't mind, but I cannot get everything to work. It is getting there, albeit very slowly.

Bland I can take or leave. Mine are production machines and the less glitz the less problems finding what I need or want.

In a word, YESYESYESYESYES! I hate that I have virtually no choice in what or how Search works!

Absolutely! There are far too many versions of motherboards, audio (built in and installable hardware), video (built in and installable hardware), etc., etc., etc. for a "one size fits all" hardware driver update to have any position in my OS!

Just as a FYI, you can use a Local account, rather than a Microsoft account. I'm not sure, but I think, you can choose when to go onto the Internet and update hardware drivers with a local account.

Some of the things you pointed out don't make any difference to me and some I feel strongly enough about to throw in my two cents worth also. I know there are those who think we're off our gourds because we want what we want, but I simply am not going to bow to their opinions no more than they will bow to mine. *Smile

Well, it certainly wasn't an easy decision to make, but...

Many things can happen in a few months. If MS is NOT listening to their users they will fail. They are betting the farm on Windows 10 and if it turns out to be another Windows ME many users will flock to Linux, an OS that for the most part is free with no strings attached. I really do not want to get an OS and jump through all kind of hoops trying to get it to look like I want. I have that now in Windows 7 and I am happy with it. I will try 10 but if does it doesd not get better I will stay with 7. I suppose that one has a full year to decide.

@Gary I don't know how many times I've heard that people will switch to Linux.. but in the end they just don't. Linux is something that most users just don't understand enough or know which distribution to select.
