I've used Linux before as well but I really don't think that the majority of PC users will even upgrade an OS or go to Linux. Some will go to Linux but the vast majority just say they will and eventually don't.

I fully understand what Wenda is saying about Win 10 and I agree on most of it. But this is what really caught my attention...

That should not be the case. Image restoration is meant to be an easy task to do. Much easier than clean installation. It is supposed to be an easy and quick fix for acting up OSes. It should only take between 15 and 30mins. Something is definitely not right.

Personal data should be separate to begin with. It should be backep up separately. If that 150GB image gets corrupted. End of the story. I hope you do have a separate data backup.

I am Linux amateur and love my Mint Mate systems and also Zorin. I can do most anything with Mint that I do in Windows. There are a few Windows programs though that I need. Maybe a virtual Windows running under Linux would be the solution. I know a few people who run like that. But if you show a webpage like this to the uninitiated Linux newcomer, no wonder they get scared, LOL.

So true.. Linux can seem daunting for many and that's a huge determinant.

Hi whs. A question for you. What do you like about MATE over the other the other editions, like Cinnamon, or KDE, or Xfce?

What I like about mate is that I can easily customize it. There are more possibilities and it is easy. See here. And also here.

Folks I tried to do my best with W-10 but this last build will make me loose all my hair.

My first true PC I bought from on of those Home Shopping networks on TV.

A bunch of boxes of things I didn't know what was what or what to do with what.
A bunch of CD's and DVD's of things I never heard of. I took a short time to hook all the pieces together with all the cables. Now what do I do. Once I figured out how to get the damn CD/DVD player to open the challenge started.
I probably installed Windows 98 and removed it 2 dozen times before I got the job done. Now what the hell do I do with all these other CD's. That is when I discovered that one only uses one anti virus program on one computer at a time.
Of course now I had to learn how to remove the unneeded program. I could go on and on but I won't. Well yes I will.
Now how do I get to this wonderful thing called the internet. New discovery, I need drivers. What the hell are drivers. I found them on a assortment of CD's that came in one of the boxes. Then I discovered the internet is free as soon as you pay for a contract so you can use the internet.

So when someone states they didn't know any thing when they started I'm not really sure they understand what not knowing anything really is.

***I typed all this to let you know I'm not afraid of a new operating system or to learn to use it. Windows 10 last edition or update what ever they want to call it, is taking all the fun I use to have learning a new operating system.

I gave W-10 a new home on it's own new ssd just like I would if I bought a new ready for prime time operating system. I use it in a 5 1/4 bay hot swap. I can't even leave it in the hot sway if I choose to boot into Windows 7 without getting into a loop scan disk.

W-10 gets a computer with all new hardware. Less than a year old. I tinkered, played with and tickled a little to try and enjoy it. So far no such luck.

I'm still trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with Control Panel and why it's gone. Also what is wrong with icons. They work great and easy.
Every time I type in Start/Search I go Global instead of just in my computer where I intended to go.

Wendy's post covered my thought real close. When I find something it doesn't work properly.
I for sure don't like it when I have to install or use things I don't want. I should be able to turn off, disable or remove things without destroying the complete system.
How do you buy things from the app store when you don't use credit cards or PayPal or the like.

I will just wait for the next upgrade and see how it works.
Tomorrow I get another Windows 7/64 Pro DVD delivered to my house as a backup for my next build. Comes from Microsoft via my Intel Dealer to my house.
I have been looking for a new case for another build and I don't want to get stuck with Windows 10 being the only option.
A little paranoid maybe, but knows what Microsoft is going to do to drive people to Windows 10. How about stop making Windows 7 DVD's.
I don't not put it past them.
It will probable take me a year to get enough money to build my next computer but I got my Windows 7 tomorrow.
If Windows 10 turns out okay, well then I got a dual boot. Win Win.

You know, everyone was screaming and hollering for a new build... just give it to us, we don't care if it's buggy or has problems...

    So, Microsoft did...

And now everyone's like "Microsoft killed my puppy", "This new build of windows has destroyed my will to live", "OH MY GOD WHO MOVED MY CHEEZE? I'M GOING TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK".

You really should be careful what you ask for....

Yes,, it's a TP(Beta) and it's still a work in progress.. so far I'm very impressed but there are bugs and that's to be expected at this stage of it's development.

Looks like I am the lucky one. 10041 does not install on my system. LOL When a better build comes around, I will reinstall the whole thing.

MATE has similar operating principles to earlier versions of Windows (W7 and earlier).

Cinnamon seems similar to MATE, but apparently it uses hidden hotspots (corners?).

XFCE is also supposed to be very similar to earlier versions of Windows (but requires less resources than other desktop environments).
I haven't played around with it (although I pinched an XFCE theme to use in MATE).

KDE is also supposed to be very similar to earlier versions of Windows (but requires more resources than other desktop environments).
I played around with it for a couple of hours, but I didn't like it.
The latest version (Plasma) looks nice (I haven't tried it).

W10TP b10041 has worked better for me than b9926 did.
