What am I doing wrong in trying to boot via USB?

At a guess I'd say that "Setup" does not apply the usual 200% ? scaling Win8/10 would use at that res on a laptop ,similar to my Surface3 which is always scaled at 150% . There maybe a Setup command-line switch you can use to force the resolution to 800x600 or something more reasonable.?

Can you not use the Lenovo recovery partition instead ?

    Thanks for suggestions guys!
I thought I might add that 2 hours ago I successfully dual booted my larger Acer laptop. I had already set aside a partition G: from my C: hard-drive in the amount of 50GB's. It was already using W.8.1 & I had no problem setting up W.10 as well. I might add I didn't have to change any priorities in the BIOS/UEFI, as I said before I selected 'setup.exe from the 'Sources' folder of my USB flash drive in File Explorer, (as suggested by Shawn Brink in one of his tutorials), & that gave me the opportunity of selecting the 'Custom: Install' necessary for dual-booting. I am in the process of setting up all my files, etc. but I thought I must answer your suggestions first.
Kbird, I can set the resolution at anything I want, but will that affect the setting-up procedure for W.8.1?
If I'm understanding you correctly I have the text, etc. scaled at 225%, can a change in this apply to setting up W.8.1?
lxO7, I didn't understand what you were getting at. I do know that when I went into the BIOS/UEFI of my Lenovo Ultrabook after I had inserted my bootable W.8.1 USB flash drive. Under EFI, I changed the position of EFI USB Device (Generic USB Storage), to above Windows Boot Manager. But I don't know why I did it. I'm not too familiar with the BIOS procedures. Thanks again guys. Please remember I'm 83 years old today, (2nd Aug.) & a bit slow on the uptake everyday!!

Some Programs are not what is known as High DPI Aware, so at resolutions above 1920 x 1080 they don't adjust themselves and you end up with teenie dialog boxes ,menus etc. ( At 4k you have 4x the pixels on-screen vs 1920 res.) I ran into this yesterday installing Office 2007 on a Surface 3 though not as extreme as your issue at 4k.

I am not sure if Win 10 has a Setup switch to set the res. or not?

    PS. Happy Birthday ! *Smile

What am I doing wrong in trying to boot via USB?

Thanks for the birthday wishes Kbird. I'm pretty sure I can set the resolution on the Lenovo Ultrabook Pro to quite a few different settings. What setting do you suggest I set it at?

I did not find any command-line switches after a quick google to set the Setup Resolution , Win10 may just use the "Native resolution" that the Laptop will report to win10 setup when it asks , unfortunately Setup does not appear to apply Scaling automatically too which at 4k would be 250% ?

Are you able to Use Assistive Technology (Ease Of Access Button )during the install ? if so you should be able to turn on the Magnifier Option after clicking the 3/4 Clock ? Icon (middle icon) like in the RH Corner in the image below.

Thanks again for those tips Kbird. Now I'm having real problems: 'The blue screen of death' 3 times. So now I've got to try & work out what's causing that. I may have to do a factory reset & start from scratch. Upgrading to W.10 has brought me nothing but grief on this Ultrabook.

did you google the BSOD numbers ? it's unlikely you are the 1st one with that Code , so worth a search.

installing a BlueScreen Viewer like below may help identify the issue

Blue screen of death (STOP error) information in dump files.

you maybe right , it may be easier to do a factory reestore and start again , especially now the Win10 Anniv. Update is here , which is a massive download in itself.

What am I doing wrong in trying to boot via USB?

Thanks Kbird, the culprit for the BSOD was a 128GB flash drive that I had left plugged in for backup, it had always been temperamental, I had to jiggle it around to get it to work.
I changed the resolution to 1366x768 but it didn't make any difference, so I went ahead with the small dialog boxes & the magnifying glass & lo & behold it went pretty smoothly & I successfully installed W.8.1 on the partition. I didn't expect to get all my apps back, but they were all there, so I'm very happy. The thing I mainly learned was that when installing from a bootable device, it's better to execute it from the File Explorer: Bootable Flash Drive>Sources>Setup.exe file. I thank everybody very much for your advice & patience.
