What are the Cookies and Application Data folders in C:\Users\Username ?

I recently went to a local IT shop to reinstall Windows as I had a problem with Malware. Looking through the files I found these two folders that I cannot access and I don't know what they are: Application Data and Cookies in C:\Users\Username. What do you think? There are other files that have the same error when I try to access them.I already scanned the laptop with multiple tools and it seems good.I am logged in on the Admin account.I tried takeown /F and even if it completes successfully the result doesn't change.the images might not show-up as intendedEdit: Wanted to also mention that a

  2. How can I clean up (delete) thousands of recursive C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Application Data\Application Data\ files?

    Hi Tom,

Use the /XJD parameter with Robocopy to prevent this issue.

    • /XJD :: eXclude symbolic links for Directories and Junction points.
The "Application Data" item is a NTFS junction that points to "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local". The permissions for the "Application Data" may have been altered that causes the recursion.

    Run

    • icacls "%localappdata%\application data"
    and

    • dir "%localappdata%\application data" /ad
    • dir "%localappdata%\appl*" /ad
    Pls post the output here.

  3. How can I clean up (delete) thousands of recursive C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Application Data\Application Data\ files?

    How can I clean up (delete) thousands of recursive C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data ...... \Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\IndexedDB\https_xxxxx...32 characters...xxxxxx.safeframe.googlesyndication.com_0.indexddb.leveldb\ ?

Using explorer I can see (and access) the tree \Users\username\AppData\Local\ but I can't see (or get to ) any of the recursive Application Data\ folders.

I'm using robocopy to backup the \Users\username\ folders and it sees (and copies) the recursive tree. I don't know why I can't manage them.

Oh, that xxxxxx...32 characters...xxxxx string is a hex based 32 character string that is constantly changing (non-repeating).

    Thanks

    Tom

What are the Cookies and Application Data folders in C:\Users\Username ?

User's folder is not present in c:\\Users

Putting aside your somewhat random use of forward, backward, and double slashes, please explain the difference between:

    • In Windows 7 Window Explorer, one cannot view the UserName folder
      in c:\\Users
    and

    • UserName folder, normally viewable from c://Users, can be still be viewed and fully accessed from UserName's Desktop
      via Window's Explorer
Click Start, type C:\Users into the Search box, and press Enter

Please list everything you see. If you would rather not reveal actual user names, use UserA, UserB, UserC, etc. Please mention whether view hidden files and folders is enabled or not.

Is the name of one (or more) users missing from the list of items?

Navigate to any document in the "UserName folder" that you can't see in C:\Users, then right-click and select Properties.

What is shown as the document's "Location"? Again, if you want to use UserA rather than the actual name, that's OK.
