    What are the crosses on the files in Explorer


    I was rummaging through system files Windows 10After going through the folders, I went into the folder "Containers". >>> WindowsDefenderApplicationGuard.wim using 7z archiver. >>> WindowsDefenderApplicationGuard.vhdx >>> Files >>> Program Files >>> WindowsApps >>> And copied this folder to the desktop. But in the WindowsApps folder >>> Windows Photos There were files with crosses and they did not open... How to fix this???

    Hi,

    To assist you with your concern, we suggest you pin the File Explorer from the Start Menu by following these steps:

    • Click the Start Menu.
    • Right-click File Explorer.
    • Choose Pin to taskbar.

    "This file can't be previewed" problem in explorer

    Hi Deborah,

    For us to provide an accurate resolution, kindly elaborate the issue by answering the questions listed below:

    • Since when have you been experiencing this issue?
    • Were there any changes on your PC before this happened like software or updates installed?

    For initial troubleshooting, we suggest that you follow the steps listed below:

    • Open File Explorer.
    • Access this link

      C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
    • Delete all the files.
    • After deleting the files kindly try and see if there's a thumbnail preview of your files.

    Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.



    Seems that you are unable to access/open older files on file explorer which were created/saved before 2017 and it has a grey cross on it.



    In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below.



    • What is the Windows 10 version and Build installed? (Type
      winver in Windows search/Run command)
    • What is the file format/type that has the cross mark?
    • What is the location in file explorer, these files are saved?
    • Are you aware of any changes, prior to this issue?


    In order to investigate the issue, please provide a screenshot of the file explorer window where you see the grey cross on the file. Please follow the steps mentioned in the

    screenshot     posted by Shawn ‘Cmdr’ Keene on Oct 2, 2015 to post the screenshots.) Do not share any personal information in the screenshots.
