  1. What are the implications of running bcdedit command while safe boot has already been...

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 20.04 alongside Windows 10 on my Acer computer. While trying to install Ubuntu, I was prompted with a warning about Intel's RST needing to be turned off. Following Choice #2 in heynnema's answer, I learned that I should:

    - (run in command prompt) bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal- (in BIOS) Change the SATA Operation mode to AHCI from either IDE or RAID

Before trying anything, I played a little bit with the bios to see how the change to AHCI could be done. It was hard so I did some research and found this answer, which suggests:

    a) access windows and then press windows + r and type msconfig. Then, go to system boot and activate safe boot. Then restart windows;

    b) then access the bios, go to the main tab, press ctrl + s and change the sata mode to ahci.

That works, the option to change to AHCI is there.

I haven't tried it yet because I was wondering if the bcdedit command proposed by heynnema does the same as following a) and activating safe boot through msconfig. I thought doing both - if case they're similar commands - could cause me problems.

  2. Windows 10 boot to safe mode

I recently had my disk drive replaced by Dell. The new drive supposedly came the initial Windows 10 image I had received when I purchased the system. I am no longer able to boot into safe mode by holding down the <shift> key when booting the system. The
boot tab in msconfig shows only

Windows 10 (c:\Windows) : Current OS; Default OS.

Is there a way to add more entries where I could assign Boot options for alternate shell or network?

I found a guide "Safe Mode in Win 10" which suggested using bcdedit as follows:

    bcdedit /copy {Current} /d "Windows 10 Safe Mode"

    The command came back with:

The copy command specified is not valid

Run "bcdedit /?" for command line assistance

    The parameter is incorrect.

What parameter should I be using to create the new entry in the boot list?

    bcdedit and Win10 Safe Mode

I have tried these (three) different Tutors they all give the same...

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Safe Mode"

The copy command specified is not valid.

Run "bcdedit /?" for command line assistance.

    The parameter is incorrect.

This is from ... Administrator: Windows Power Shell

I have gone to 'bcdedit /?' and through the commands...everything looks right as far as I can tell.

Thank you all for the fast answers.
