What are these .cab files in my C: drive for?

Hello,I am curious as to what these .cab files are doing in my C: drive. I heard they were updates, but it says that these were modified last in 2019!I can assure you these files popped up only recently. I have not even owned this computer for that long, I'm pretty sure.If anyone could shed some light on what these files here are for, if they are safe to delete, what tools I can use for deleting them, et cetera.. Please do tell me. Thanks...windows 6.1..?

  2. installing a cab file

so basically the instructions on this page is erroneous or outdated

How to Install cumulative updates CAB/.msu Files on Windows 11/10

    • Download the CAB Files x86 / X64 depending upon the OS architecture
    • Rename file to KBnumber.сab (for example KB3176931.Cab)
    • Copy to folder C:\
    • Run command-prompt as admin (Right click on Windows icon and choose option). Check the image above.
    • Enter the command “DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\KBnumber.cab
    • This installs the CU CAB File. Check the screenshots below for example.
    • Your devices will restart once the installation is over. Else you may need to restart your PC

this is the first page for google search.

I already tried NOT naming the file. I used the original name. still not found

    5856 _patchlink????.cab files in root of C:

Hi there Robert, thanks for your question.

Please see the below thread which shows the experience of other users with .cab files in the C: drive:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

It seems it would be safe to remove those files. If you're having trouble with the files being recreated automatically, you could try the steps outlined in that community thread.

Please let me know if you need further support! Thanks!
